METHOD OF CONTROLLING BRAKING IN RESPONSE TO SENSOR FAILURE IN AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17984554 titled 'METHOD OF CONTROLLING BRAKING IN RESPONSE TO SENSOR FAILURE IN AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a method for controlling the braking system of autonomous vehicles in response to sensor failure. When a braking-related sensor fails, the host vehicle requests assistance from another nearby autonomous vehicle to determine the deceleration of the host vehicle and transmit this information. The host vehicle then uses this deceleration information to accurately determine the braking hydraulic pressure and apply it to the braking device. This allows the host vehicle to continue driving to its destination or a safe place, even when manual driving is not possible.

  • The method is used in autonomous vehicles to respond to sensor failure in the braking system.
  • When a braking-related sensor fails, the host vehicle requests assistance from another nearby autonomous vehicle.
  • The aid vehicle determines the deceleration of the host vehicle and transmits this information to the host vehicle.
  • The host vehicle uses the deceleration information to accurately determine the braking hydraulic pressure.
  • The accurate braking hydraulic pressure is then applied to the braking device.
  • This method allows the host vehicle to continue driving to its destination or a safe place, even when manual driving is not possible.

Potential Applications

  • Autonomous vehicles with advanced braking systems.
  • Automotive industry.
  • Transportation and logistics companies.
  • Emergency response vehicles.

Problems Solved

  • Responding to sensor failure in the braking system of autonomous vehicles.
  • Ensuring safe and accurate braking even when a braking-related sensor fails.
  • Allowing the vehicle to continue driving to a destination or a safe place without manual intervention.

Benefits

  • Improved safety and reliability of autonomous vehicles.
  • Reduces the risk of accidents or collisions due to sensor failure.
  • Enables autonomous vehicles to handle sensor failures and continue driving safely.
  • Provides a solution for situations where manual driving is not possible.

Original Abstract Submitted

In a braking control method of responding to sensor failure for autonomous vehicles, when a braking-related sensor, such as a G sensor or a braking hydraulic sensor, has failed while driving of an autonomous vehicle, the host vehicle requests a nearby another autonomous vehicle determine a deceleration of the host vehicle and transmit deceleration information to the host vehicle. The host vehicle accurately determines a braking hydraulic pressure based on the deceleration information received from the aid vehicle and apply the accurate braking hydraulic pressure to a braking device. In the present manner, even in the case in which it is difficult to convert the vehicle to manual driving, the host vehicle is able to drive to a destination or a safe place.
