INFORMATION PROCESSING APPARATUS, METHOD FOR CONTROLLING THE SAME AND STORAGE MEDIUM - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17978371 titled 'INFORMATION PROCESSING APPARATUS, METHOD FOR CONTROLLING THE SAME AND STORAGE MEDIUM

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes an information processing apparatus that has a volatile memory and a non-volatile storage. It can store a main firmware for the apparatus to function and a communication firmware for booting.

  • The information processing apparatus can connect to a server using the communication firmware and retrieve a recovery firmware.
  • The recovery firmware is then loaded into the volatile memory of the apparatus.
  • The apparatus can then obtain an updated version of the main firmware from the server using the loaded recovery firmware.
  • The updated main firmware is then used to replace the existing main firmware stored in the non-volatile storage.

Potential Applications

  • This technology can be applied in various electronic devices such as computers, smartphones, and tablets.
  • It can be used in network devices like routers and switches to update their firmware remotely.

Problems Solved

  • This technology solves the problem of updating firmware in information processing apparatus without the need for physical access or manual intervention.
  • It allows for remote firmware updates, eliminating the need for users to manually update their devices.

Benefits

  • The information processing apparatus can easily and securely update its firmware without user intervention.
  • It enables quick deployment of bug fixes, security patches, and new features to the apparatus.
  • Remote firmware updates reduce the need for physical maintenance and support, saving time and resources.

Original Abstract Submitted

An information processing apparatus comprises a volatile memory and a non-volatile storage capable of storing a main firmware for causing the information processing apparatus to realize the predetermined function and a communication firmware for booting. The information processing apparatus accesses a predetermined server using the communication firmware, obtains recovery firmware, and loads the recovery firmware into a volatile memory. Further, the information processing apparatus obtains an updated main firmware from the predetermined server using the loaded recovery firmware, and updates the main firmware stored in the non-volatile storage.
