SERVER AND CONTROL METHOD THEREOF - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17975817 titled 'SERVER AND CONTROL METHOD THEREOF

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a server system that can determine the location of a terminal device using image data received from it. The system compares the image data with a virtual positioning system (VPS) map to determine the location and identifies areas where there is a significant difference between the image data and the map. The system then updates the map based on the image data or requests crowdsourcing of additional image data for those areas.

  • The server system receives image data from a terminal device.
  • It determines the location of the terminal device by comparing the image data with a virtual positioning system (VPS) map.
  • The system identifies areas where there is a significant difference between the image data and the map.
  • It updates the map and key points based on the received image data.
  • Alternatively, the system can request crowdsourcing of additional image data for those areas.

Potential Applications

  • Location-based services: The technology can be used in applications that require accurate location information, such as navigation systems, augmented reality, and geolocation-based marketing.
  • Indoor positioning: The system can be used to improve indoor positioning accuracy, allowing for better navigation and tracking within buildings or enclosed spaces.
  • Crowd mapping: By crowdsourcing image data, the system can contribute to the creation and updating of maps, especially in areas where traditional mapping methods may be limited or unavailable.

Problems Solved

  • Accurate location determination: The system solves the problem of accurately determining the location of a terminal device by using image data and comparing it with a virtual positioning system map.
  • Map updating: The system addresses the challenge of keeping maps up to date by automatically updating key points and descriptors based on received image data or requesting crowdsourced data.

Benefits

  • Improved location accuracy: By utilizing image data, the system can provide more precise location information compared to traditional methods that rely solely on GPS or Wi-Fi signals.
  • Real-time map updates: The system allows for real-time updates of maps, ensuring that users have access to the most current and accurate information.
  • Cost-effective mapping: By leveraging crowdsourcing, the system can collect image data without the need for extensive manual mapping efforts, making it a cost-effective solution for map creation and updating.

Original Abstract Submitted

A server includes a communicator; and a controller configured to: when an image data is received from a terminal device through the communicator, determine a first key point of the image data and a first descriptor corresponding to the first key point, determine a location of the terminal device by comparing the first descriptor with a second descriptor stored in a virtual positioning system (VPS) map, determine an area where a difference between the first descriptor and the second descriptor is greater than or equal to a predetermined value based on the location of the terminal device, and update a key point of the area on the VPS map and the second descriptor based on the image data, or request crowdsourcing of an image data about the area.
