DRIVING SUPPORT DEVICE, DRIVING SUPPORT METHOD, AND DRIVING SUPPORT PROGRAM - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17974052 titled 'DRIVING SUPPORT DEVICE, DRIVING SUPPORT METHOD, AND DRIVING SUPPORT PROGRAM

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a driving support device that includes a signal color recognition device and a speed control device. The speed control device controls the drive and braking devices of a vehicle to maintain a speed equal to or lower than a target value before reaching a recognizable point. The recognizable point is determined by the distance to the nearest traffic light.

  • The device controls the vehicle's speed to ensure it does not exceed a target value before reaching a recognizable point.
  • The recognizable point is determined by the distance to the nearest traffic light.
  • The device also controls the vehicle's speed when the signal color of the traffic light is green and the distance to the next traffic light is below a threshold value.
  • The vehicle travels at a constant speed equal to or lower than the target value until the signal color of the traffic light changes.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • This technology can be used in autonomous vehicles to ensure safe and efficient driving by controlling the vehicle's speed based on traffic light information.
  • It can also be implemented in advanced driver assistance systems to provide support and enhance the driving experience.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • This technology addresses the issue of drivers not being able to accurately judge the appropriate speed to approach a traffic light.
  • It helps prevent accidents caused by speeding or sudden braking near traffic lights.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Improved safety by maintaining a controlled speed near traffic lights.
  • Enhanced fuel efficiency by optimizing speed control based on traffic light information.
  • Reduced traffic congestion by promoting smoother and more consistent driving near traffic lights.

Original Abstract Submitted

A driving support device () includes a signal color recognition device and a speed control device. The speed control device controls a drive device () and a braking device () of an own vehicle before a recognizable point (Pr) such that a vehicle speed (Vs) at a time at which the own vehicle reaches the recognizable point (Pr) is equal to or lower than a target value (V) which is a lower speed than a target value (Vd). The recognizable point (Pr) is a point at which a distance to the nearest traffic light (S) positioned in front of the own vehicle is a predetermined value (Lr). The speed control device also controls the drive device () and the braking device () such that, when the signal color recognition device recognizes a signal color of the traffic light (S), the signal color is green, and a distance (DS) between the traffic light (S) and a traffic light (S) next in front from the traffic light (S) is equal to or shorter than a predetermined threshold value (DSth), the own vehicle travels at a constant speed equal to or lower than the target value (V) until the signal color recognition device recognizes a signal color of the traffic light (S).
