USER INTERFACES FOR A COMPASS APPLICATION - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17971464 titled 'USER INTERFACES FOR A COMPASS APPLICATION

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes an electronic device that has a compass user interface with a direction indicator and a bearing indicator. The direction indicator shows the compass direction based on the orientation of the device, while the bearing indicator shows the offset from the compass direction. The device can detect rotation of an input mechanism and adjust the position of the bearing indicator accordingly.

  • The electronic device has a compass user interface with a direction indicator and a bearing indicator.
  • The direction indicator displays the compass direction based on the device's orientation.
  • The appearance of the direction indicator changes depending on the orientation of the device.
  • The bearing indicator shows the offset from the compass direction.
  • The device can detect rotation of a rotatable input mechanism.
  • When the bearing indicator is displayed, the device adjusts its position based on the rotation of the input mechanism.
  • The amount of adjustment depends on the magnitude of the rotation.

Potential Applications

  • Navigation devices: The technology can be used in navigation devices to provide accurate compass directions and bearing indicators.
  • Outdoor activities: It can be useful for hikers, campers, and outdoor enthusiasts to have a reliable compass interface on their electronic devices.
  • Augmented reality: The technology can be integrated into augmented reality applications to provide accurate compass directions and bearing indicators.

Problems Solved

  • Accurate compass direction: The technology ensures that the displayed compass direction is aligned with the actual orientation of the device.
  • Easy adjustment of bearing indicator: The device allows users to easily adjust the position of the bearing indicator by rotating the input mechanism.

Benefits

  • Improved user experience: Users can rely on the accurate compass direction and bearing indicators provided by the device.
  • Convenient adjustment: The ability to adjust the bearing indicator position by rotating the input mechanism makes it easy for users to fine-tune their navigation.
  • Versatile applications: The technology can be applied in various devices and scenarios, such as navigation devices, outdoor activities, and augmented reality applications.

Original Abstract Submitted

An electronic device displays a compass user interface with a direction indicator and a bearing indicator. The direction indicator provides an indication of a respective compass direction, wherein the appearance of the direction indicator is determined based on the orientation of the electronic device relative to the respective compass direction. The bearing indicator provides an indication of an offset from the respective compass direction. While displaying the bearing indicator, the electronic device detects rotation of the rotatable input mechanism and, in response, changes the displayed position of the bearing indicator from a first position to a second position by an amount that is determined in accordance with a magnitude of the rotation of the rotatable input mechanism.
