DYNAMICALLY UPDATING FIRMWARE PROFILE CONFIGURATIONS ON COMPUTING DEVICES - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17971405 titled 'DYNAMICALLY UPDATING FIRMWARE PROFILE CONFIGURATIONS ON COMPUTING DEVICES

Simplified Explanation

The present disclosure describes a firmware configuration system for efficiently updating firmware profile configurations of computing devices without the need to develop, deploy, and install a new BIOS. The system updates firmware profile configurations by modifying a profile configuration table in flash memory with a firmware profile configuration update patch, without affecting other parts of the BIOS.

  • The firmware configuration system allows for updating firmware profile configurations of computing devices, such as host devices in a data center, without the need for developing, deploying, and installing a new BIOS.
  • The system updates firmware profile configurations by modifying a profile configuration table in flash memory with a firmware profile configuration update patch, without impacting other parts of the BIOS.
  • The updates are facilitated through a baseband management controller, enabling efficient and seamless updating of firmware profile configurations.

Potential Applications

The technology can be applied in data centers, server farms, and other computing environments where firmware updates are required to maintain system integrity and security.

Problems Solved

1. Eliminates the need to develop, deploy, and install a new BIOS for updating firmware profile configurations. 2. Enables efficient and targeted updates to firmware profile configurations without affecting other parts of the BIOS.

Benefits

1. Saves time and resources by streamlining the firmware update process. 2. Reduces the risk of errors and system downtime associated with traditional BIOS updates. 3. Enhances system security by enabling quick and targeted firmware updates.

Potential Commercial Applications

"Efficient Firmware Configuration System for Computing Devices" can find applications in data centers, cloud computing facilities, and server management companies looking to streamline their firmware update processes.

Possible Prior Art

There may be prior art related to firmware update systems for computing devices, but the specific approach of updating firmware profile configurations without developing a new BIOS may be a novel aspect of this technology.

Unanswered Questions

1. How does the firmware configuration system handle potential conflicts or compatibility issues with existing firmware configurations? 2. Are there any limitations to the types of firmware profile configurations that can be updated using this system?

Original Abstract Submitted

The present disclosure relates to utilizing a firmware configuration system to efficiently update a firmware profile configuration of computing devices (e.g., host devices in a datacenter). For example, the firmware configuration system facilitates updating the firmware profile configuration, such as for a Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) profile and/or a Basic Input/Output System (BIOS), without needing to develop, deploy, and install a new BIOS. More specifically, the firmware configuration system updates (e.g., via a baseband management controller) firmware profile configurations by modifying a profile configuration table in flash memory (i.e., on an SPI flash-based chip) of a BIOS with a firmware profile configuration update patch and without affecting other parts of the BIOS.
