SELECTIVELY PIVOTABLE MID-GATE FOR A VEHICLE - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17962594 titled 'SELECTIVELY PIVOTABLE MID-GATE FOR A VEHICLE

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a selectively pivotable mid-gate for a vehicle that includes two mid-gate members pivotally mounted to the vehicle through a hinge member, with a latch system allowing for controlled rotation in different directions.

  • The invention involves a first mid-gate member pivotally mounted to the vehicle through a hinge member.
  • A second mid-gate member is pivotally mounted to the vehicle and the first mid-gate member through the hinge member.
  • A latch system is operatively connected to the first mid-gate member and the second mid-gate member, allowing for controlled rotation.
  • The latch system can release the first mid-gate member to rotate in one direction and both mid-gate members to rotate in the opposite direction.

Potential Applications

This technology could be used in pickup trucks or other vehicles with mid-gates to provide flexibility in cargo management and access.

Problems Solved

This innovation solves the problem of limited access and cargo management options in vehicles with mid-gates by allowing for controlled and selective rotation of the mid-gate members.

Benefits

The benefits of this technology include improved versatility in cargo management, easier access to the vehicle's bed, and enhanced functionality for users.

Potential Commercial Applications

Potential commercial applications include pickup truck manufacturers, automotive accessory companies, and other vehicle manufacturers looking to enhance the functionality of their products.

Possible Prior Art

One possible prior art could be existing mid-gate designs in pickup trucks or other vehicles, which may not offer the same level of controlled rotation and flexibility as the described invention.

Unanswered Questions

How does this technology impact vehicle safety?

The article does not address the potential impact of this technology on vehicle safety. It would be important to consider how the pivotable mid-gate may affect the structural integrity of the vehicle in the event of a collision or other safety-related scenarios.

What materials are used in the construction of the pivotable mid-gate?

The article does not provide information on the materials used in the construction of the pivotable mid-gate. Understanding the materials used can help assess the durability, weight, and cost implications of implementing this technology.

Original Abstract Submitted

A selectively pivotable mid-gate for a vehicle includes a first mid-gate member pivotally mounted to the vehicle through a hinge member and a second mid-gate member is pivotally mounted to the vehicle and the first mid-gate member through the hinge member. A latch system is operatively connected to the first mid-gate member and the second mid-gate member. The latch system is selectively operable to release the first mid-gate member to rotate in a first direction and to release the first mid-gate member and the second mid-gate member to rotate in a second direction that is opposite the first direction.
