SYNCHRONIZATION UTILIZING LOCAL TEAM BARRIERS FOR THREAD TEAM PROCESSING - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17958213 titled 'SYNCHRONIZATION UTILIZING LOCAL TEAM BARRIERS FOR THREAD TEAM PROCESSING

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes low-latency synchronization utilizing local team barriers for thread team processing. An apparatus includes one or more processors, including a graphics processor with multiple processing resources, and memory for storage of data for graphics processing. The graphics processor receives a request for establishment of a local team barrier for a thread team, determines requirements and designated threads for the barrier, and establishes the local team barrier in a local register of the first processing resource based on the requirements and designated threads.

  • Explanation:
  • Low-latency synchronization using local team barriers for thread team processing
  • Apparatus includes processors with a graphics processor and memory for data storage
  • Graphics processor receives request for local team barrier, determines requirements and designated threads, and establishes the barrier in a local register

Potential Applications: This technology could be applied in high-performance computing systems, real-time graphics rendering, and parallel processing applications.

Problems Solved: This technology solves the problem of efficiently synchronizing thread teams in a processing system, reducing latency and improving overall performance.

Benefits: The benefits of this technology include improved processing efficiency, reduced latency, and enhanced synchronization capabilities in multi-threaded applications.

Potential Commercial Applications: Potential commercial applications of this technology include data centers, cloud computing services, scientific research facilities, and gaming industries.

Possible Prior Art: One possible prior art could be the use of barriers in parallel processing systems to synchronize threads and improve performance.

Unanswered Questions: 1. How does this technology compare to existing synchronization methods in terms of performance and efficiency? 2. Are there any limitations or drawbacks to using local team barriers for thread team processing in certain applications?

Original Abstract Submitted

Low-latency synchronization utilizing local team barriers for thread team processing is described. An example of an apparatus includes one or more processors including a graphics processor, the graphics processor including a plurality of processing resources; and memory for storage of data including data for graphics processing, wherein the graphics processor is to receive a request for establishment of a local team barrier for a thread team, the thread team being allocated to a first processing resource, the thread team including multiple threads; determine requirements and designated threads for the local team barrier; and establish the local team barrier in a local register of the first processing resource based at least in part on the requirements and designated threads for the local barrier.
