HMB MULTI-SEGMENT OPTIMAL SELECTION - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17958182 titled 'HMB MULTI-SEGMENT OPTIMAL SELECTION

Simplified Explanation

The present disclosure relates to improved host memory buffer (HMB) segment selection at the initialization phase. Instead of selecting an HMB segment strictly based on one parameter, the selection process will consider multiple factors of the HMB segments. Basic performance measurements will be performed on the provided HMB segments before selection, and the decision will be based on the performance results from various experiments conducted during the initialization phase.

  • Factors considered in HMB segment selection:
    • Multiple parameters of HMB segments are evaluated.
    • Basic performance measurements are conducted.
    • Performance results from experiments influence the selection process.
  • Potential Applications:
    • Enhanced performance and quality of service in data storage devices.
    • Improved efficiency in solid-state drives (SSDs).
  • Problems Solved:
    • Optimal selection of HMB segments for improved performance.
    • Minimization of impact on SSD performance during initialization.
  • Benefits:
    • Enhanced overall performance of data storage devices.
    • Better utilization of HMB segments for efficient data processing.
  • Potential Commercial Applications:
    • Data centers and server systems.
    • High-performance computing applications.
  • Possible Prior Art:
    • Previous methods may have focused solely on HMB segment size for selection.
    • Limited consideration of performance factors in HMB segment selection.
      1. Unanswered Questions:
        1. How does the selection process impact the overall performance of the data storage device?

The selection process based on performance measurements and experiments aims to optimize the performance of the solid-state drive (SSD) by choosing the most suitable HMB segments. However, the specific impact on the overall performance metrics needs further clarification through empirical data and comparative analysis.

        1. What are the specific performance measurements conducted on the HMB segments during the experiments?

While the abstract mentions basic performance measurements such as read, write, and mixed operations, the exact methodology and metrics used for evaluating the performance of HMB segments are not detailed. Understanding the specific performance measurements and their relevance to the selection process would provide insights into the effectiveness of the proposed innovation.

Original Abstract Submitted

The present disclosure generally relates to improved host memory buffer (HMB) segment selection at the initialization phase. Rather than selecting an HMB segment strictly on one parameter, the selection process will consider multiple factors of the HMB segments. Instead of just selecting a HMB segments based on the size of the HMB segment, the data storage device will perform some basic performance measurements on the provided HMB segments before selecting HMB segments. The selection will be based also on the performance results from the various experiments. The experiments are performed in the initialization phase so the performance of the solid state drive (SSD) will not be impacted. The basic experiments include read, write, and mixed operations toward the HMB segments while measuring the performance and QoS.
