METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR SELF-ONBOARDING OF IOT DEVICES - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17947848 titled 'METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR SELF-ONBOARDING OF IOT DEVICES

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a method for self-onboarding an IoT device. Here are the key points:

  • The IoT device identifies a trusted device and nearby wireless networks.
  • It establishes a connection with an onboarding server through the trusted device.
  • The IoT device sends a list of nearby wireless networks to the onboarding server.
  • The IoT device receives self-provisioning information from the onboarding server.
  • The IoT device uses the self-provisioning information to onboard itself to the wireless network.

Potential Applications

  • IoT devices that need to be easily and securely onboarded to wireless networks.
  • Smart home devices, such as thermostats or security cameras, that require initial setup.
  • Industrial IoT devices that need to connect to a network during installation.

Problems Solved

  • Simplifies the onboarding process for IoT devices, reducing the need for manual configuration.
  • Provides a secure method for IoT devices to connect to wireless networks.
  • Allows for easy deployment and installation of IoT devices in various environments.

Benefits

  • Streamlines the setup process for IoT devices, saving time and effort.
  • Enhances security by establishing a connection through a trusted device.
  • Enables self-provisioning, eliminating the need for manual intervention during onboarding.

Original Abstract Submitted

Provided is a self-onboarding method for an IoT device. The method includes: identifying, by the IoT device, a trusted device and at least one wireless network in a vicinity of the IoT device; based on identifying the trusted device in the vicinity of the IoT device, establishing, by the IoT device, a connection with an onboarding server through the trusted device; based on identifying the at least one wireless network in the vicinity of the IoT device, sending, by the IoT device, a list of the at least one wireless network to the onboarding server using the connection; receiving, by the IoT device, self-provisioning information from the onboarding server; and onboarding, by the IoT device, through the at least one wireless network based on the self-provisioning information.
