Systems and Methods for Film Grain Synthesis and Insertion - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17946899 titled 'Systems and Methods for Film Grain Synthesis and Insertion

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a patent application for adding digital film grain to images and videos displayed on electronic devices. The image processing circuitry of the device generates film grain templates, samples them pseudo-randomly, scales the values, and combines them with pixel values in the image frame.

  • Hardware components such as display pipeline hardware and memory-to-memory scaler and rotator (MSR) hardware are used in the image processing circuitry.
  • Film grain values are fetched based on characteristics of a target film grain and scaled before being combined with pixel values.
  • The process involves generating film grain templates, sampling them pseudo-randomly, and integrating them with pixel values in the image frame.

Potential Applications

This technology could be used in:

  • Digital photography
  • Video editing software
  • Film production

Problems Solved

This technology solves the problem of adding realistic film grain effects to digital images and videos.

Benefits

The benefits of this technology include:

  • Enhancing the visual appeal of digital content
  • Providing a vintage or cinematic look to images and videos
  • Adding depth and texture to digital media

Potential Commercial Applications

The potential commercial applications of this technology include:

  • Software development for image and video editing
  • Integration into digital cameras and smartphones
  • Licensing for film production companies

Possible Prior Art

One possible prior art for this technology could be the use of film grain simulation software in video editing applications.

Original Abstract Submitted

Systems and methods are provided for adding digital film grain to images and videos displayed by a display of an electronic device. An image processing circuitry of the electronic device may include hardware, such as display pipeline hardware, memory-to-memory scaler and rotator (MSR) hardware, and/or other possible hardware, that enables generation of film grain templates based on characteristics of a target film grain, pseudo-randomly samples the programmable template to fetch film grain values, scales the film grain values, and combines the scaled film grain values with values of pixels in an image frame.
