DYNAMIC ROWHAMMER MANAGEMENT - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17940430 titled 'DYNAMIC ROWHAMMER MANAGEMENT

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a method to mitigate or manage the effect of "rowhammer" on a DRAM device by using a memory controller to monitor and control row activations.

  • Memory controller receives activation count threshold value from DRAM device
  • Detects row activation commands sent to DRAM device
  • Counts number of row activation commands
  • Sends mitigative refresh command to DRAM device based on comparison of counted row activation commands with threshold value

Potential Applications

  • Data centers
  • High-performance computing
  • Mobile devices

Problems Solved

  • Mitigating rowhammer effect on DRAM devices
  • Preventing data corruption and system crashes

Benefits

  • Improved reliability of DRAM devices
  • Extended lifespan of memory modules
  • Enhanced system performance and stability

Original Abstract Submitted

Mitigating or managing an effect known as “rowhammer” upon a DRAM device may include a memory controller receiving an activation count threshold value from the DRAM device. The memory controller may detect row activation commands directed to the DRAM device and count the number of the row activation commands. The memory controller may send a mitigative refresh command to the DRAM device based on the result of comparing the counted number of row activation commands with the received activation count threshold value.
