PRESENCE DETECTION AND RECOGNITION WITH WI-FI - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17936799 titled 'PRESENCE DETECTION AND RECOGNITION WITH WI-FI

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a method for detecting the presence or absence of an object in a 3D space using Wi-Fi signals. Here are the key points:

  • The method involves receiving CSI (Channel State Information) data from a Wi-Fi device and a first electronic device (ED1) that are connected through at least one communication link.
  • The CSI data is preprocessed to analyze the characteristics of the Wi-Fi signals.
  • Based on the preprocessed CSI data, the method determines whether there is any motion of an object within a certain distance from the first electronic device (ED1).
  • If motion is detected, it indicates that an object is present in the space. If no motion is detected, it indicates that the space is empty.
  • The method can output indicators to indicate the occupancy status of the space. A first indicator is provided when the space is empty, and a second indicator is provided when the space is occupied.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Home automation: The method can be used to detect the presence of people in different rooms of a smart home, allowing for personalized automation and energy-saving measures.
  • Security systems: The technology can be integrated into security systems to detect unauthorized presence in restricted areas or to trigger alarms when unexpected motion is detected.
  • Retail analytics: By monitoring the occupancy of different areas in a store, retailers can gain insights into customer behavior and optimize store layouts and product placements.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Non-intrusive presence detection: Unlike traditional methods that require physical sensors or cameras, this method uses existing Wi-Fi signals to detect the presence of objects, making it less intrusive and more cost-effective.
  • Real-time occupancy monitoring: The method provides real-time information about the occupancy status of a space, allowing for immediate response or automation based on the detected presence or absence of objects.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Cost-effective: The method utilizes existing Wi-Fi infrastructure and does not require additional hardware, reducing the cost of implementation.
  • Non-intrusive: The method does not rely on cameras or physical sensors, preserving privacy and minimizing the impact on the environment.
  • Real-time and accurate: By analyzing Wi-Fi signals, the method can provide real-time and accurate information about the occupancy status of a space.

Original Abstract Submitted

A method includes receiving CSI data for at least one communication link between a first electronic device (ED1) and a Wi-Fi device in a 3D space. The method includes preprocessing the CSI data; and determining whether a motion of an object is detected within a threshold distance to the ED1 based on the preprocessed CSI data. The detection of the motion of the object corresponds to a determination that the object is present in the space. The detection of no motion of the object corresponds to a determination that the object is not present in the space. The method includes outputting at least one of: a first indicator indicating that the space is empty, in response to the determination that the object is not present in the space; or a second indicator indicating that the space is occupied, in response to the determination that the object is present in the space.
