RESPIRATION RATE DETECTION USING WI-FI - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17936357 titled 'RESPIRATION RATE DETECTION USING WI-FI

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a method for obtaining Wi-Fi channel state information (CSI) data and using it to detect and analyze respiration rates of individuals. Here is a simplified explanation of the abstract:

  • The method involves collecting CSI data over a period of time on a transmit antenna/receive antenna pair.
  • Anomalies present in the CSI data are identified and removed.
  • Phase compensation and amplitude compensation techniques are applied to the CSI data to generate clean CSI data.
  • The clean CSI data is then used to detect distinct respiration rates.
  • For each distinct respiration rate, the method determines the number of people who have that specific respiration rate.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Healthcare monitoring: The method can be used in healthcare settings to monitor the respiration rates of patients without the need for physical contact or wearable devices.
  • Home automation: The technology can be integrated into smart home systems to detect the presence and number of individuals in a room based on their respiration rates.
  • Security systems: The method can be utilized in security systems to detect the presence of unauthorized individuals by analyzing their respiration rates.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Non-intrusive monitoring: The method provides a non-intrusive way to monitor respiration rates, eliminating the need for physical sensors or wearable devices.
  • Real-time monitoring: By utilizing Wi-Fi signals, the method allows for real-time monitoring of respiration rates without requiring individuals to wear or interact with any devices.
  • Multiple person detection: The technology can detect and differentiate between multiple individuals in a given space, providing valuable information for various applications.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Convenience: The method offers a convenient way to monitor respiration rates without the need for physical contact or additional devices.
  • Cost-effective: By utilizing existing Wi-Fi infrastructure, the technology eliminates the need for expensive specialized equipment.
  • Versatility: The method can be applied in various settings, including healthcare, home automation, and security systems, providing a versatile solution for different industries.

Original Abstract Submitted

A method includes obtaining Wi-Fi channel state information (CSI) data on a transmit antenna/receive antenna pair over a time period. The method also includes removing one or more anomalies present in the CSI data. The method also includes performing at least one of phase compensation and amplitude compensation on the CSI data to generate clean CSI data. The method also includes detecting a number of distinct respiration rates based on the clean CSI data. The method also includes, for each of the distinct respiration rates, determining a number of people that have that distinct respiration rate.
