Retrieval of Positioning Assistance Data based on Persistence Information - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17920090 titled 'Retrieval of Positioning Assistance Data based on Persistence Information

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes methods for a user equipment (UE) to obtain positioning assistance data associated with a cell of a wireless network. The methods involve receiving a first part of the positioning assistance data from a positioning node via unicast in the cell, and receiving a second part of the positioning assistance data via system information broadcast in the cell. The UE then determines a persistence indicator based on the second part and selectively requests an updated first part from a network node.

  • The patent application focuses on methods for UEs to obtain positioning assistance data in a wireless network.
  • The positioning assistance data is divided into two parts - one received via unicast and the other via system information broadcast.
  • The UE determines a persistence indicator based on the second part of the positioning assistance data.
  • Based on the persistence indicator, the UE selectively requests an updated first part from a network node.

Potential Applications

  • This technology can be applied in various location-based services that rely on accurate positioning information in a wireless network.
  • It can be used in navigation applications to provide precise location data to users.
  • Emergency services can benefit from this technology by accurately locating individuals in distress.

Problems Solved

  • The patent application addresses the challenge of obtaining accurate positioning assistance data in a wireless network.
  • By dividing the data into two parts and using a persistence indicator, the methods ensure that the UE can request updated information when necessary.

Benefits

  • The methods described in the patent application improve the accuracy of positioning assistance data in a wireless network.
  • By selectively requesting updated information, the UE can ensure it has the most recent and relevant data for positioning.
  • This technology can enhance the performance of location-based services and improve user experiences.

Original Abstract Submitted

Embodiments include methods for a user equipment (UE) to obtain positioning assistance data associated with a cell of a wireless network. Such methods include receiving a first part of the positioning assistance data associated with the cell from a positioning node via unicast in the cell, and receiving a second part of the positioning assistance data associated with the cell via system information (SI) broadcast in the cell. Such methods also include, based on the second part, determining a persistence indicator associated with the first part, and based on the persistence indicator, selectively requesting an updated first part associated with the cell from a network node of the wireless network. Other embodiments include complementary methods for a positioning node as well as UEs and positioning nodes configured to perform such methods.
