VEHICLE CONTROL DEVICE, VEHICLE CONTROL METHOD, AND PROGRAM - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17912874 titled 'VEHICLE CONTROL DEVICE, VEHICLE CONTROL METHOD, AND PROGRAM

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a vehicle control device that can recognize the surrounding situation of a vehicle and control its steering and acceleration/deceleration without relying on the driver's input. It also includes a mode determiner that can determine the driving mode of the vehicle based on the road structure ahead.

  • The device includes a recognizer that can identify the surrounding situation of the vehicle.
  • It also includes a driving controller that can control the steering and acceleration/deceleration of the vehicle without the need for driver input.
  • The mode determiner can determine the driving mode of the vehicle, which can be one of multiple driving modes.
  • One of the driving modes is a second driving mode that can be ended due to the road structure ahead.
  • When the distance from the end point of the second driving mode is equal to or less than a reference distance, the driving mode is changed to the first driving mode.

Potential Applications

  • Autonomous vehicles: This technology can be used in autonomous vehicles to control their steering and acceleration/deceleration based on the surrounding situation and road structure.
  • Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS): The device can be integrated into ADAS to enhance the vehicle's control and safety features.
  • Fleet management: This technology can be utilized in fleet management systems to improve the efficiency and safety of the vehicles.

Problems Solved

  • Dependence on driver input: The device eliminates the need for driver input by controlling the vehicle's steering and acceleration/deceleration.
  • Road structure recognition: The mode determiner can identify road structures ahead and adjust the driving mode accordingly, ensuring safe and efficient driving.

Benefits

  • Improved safety: By controlling the vehicle without relying on the driver, the device can potentially reduce accidents caused by human error.
  • Enhanced efficiency: The device can optimize the vehicle's driving mode based on the road structure, leading to more efficient and fuel-saving driving.
  • Convenience: Drivers can rely on the device to handle certain driving tasks, allowing them to focus on other activities or relax during the journey.

Original Abstract Submitted

A vehicle control device includes a recognizer configured to recognize a surrounding situation of a vehicle, a driving controller configured to control steering and acceleration or deceleration of the vehicle without depending on an operation of a driver of the vehicle, and a mode determiner configured to determine a driving mode of the vehicle to be one of a plurality of driving modes including a first driving mode and a second driving mode, in which it is recognized that there is an end point to end the second driving mode due to a road structure on a traveling direction side of the vehicle, and the driving mode of the vehicle is changed from the second driving mode to the first driving mode when a distance from the end point is equal to or less than a reference distance.
