OPERATION METHOD OF MEMORY MODULE, OPERATION METHOD OF MEMORY CONTROLLER, AND OPERATION METHOD OF MEMORY SYSTEM - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17889117 titled 'OPERATION METHOD OF MEMORY MODULE, OPERATION METHOD OF MEMORY CONTROLLER, AND OPERATION METHOD OF MEMORY SYSTEM

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes an operation method for a memory controller that controls a memory module with multiple memory devices and at least one error correction code (ECC) device. The method involves reading a data set consisting of user data stored in the memory devices and ECC data stored in the ECC device, based on a read command and a specific address. If an error in the user data cannot be corrected using the ECC data, the method writes the uncorrectable data in a memory area corresponding to the specific address in each of the memory devices and the ECC device.

  • The method involves controlling a memory module with multiple memory devices and at least one ECC device.
  • It includes reading a data set consisting of user data and ECC data based on a read command and a specific address.
  • If an error in the user data cannot be corrected using the ECC data, the method writes the uncorrectable data in the corresponding memory area.

Potential Applications

  • This technology can be applied in various memory systems, such as computer memory modules, solid-state drives (SSDs), and other storage devices.
  • It can be used in data centers, servers, and other computing systems where reliable data storage and retrieval are crucial.

Problems Solved

  • The method addresses the issue of data errors in memory devices and provides a mechanism to handle uncorrectable errors.
  • By identifying and writing uncorrectable data, the method ensures that the memory module maintains data integrity and reliability.

Benefits

  • The method improves the overall reliability of memory systems by detecting and handling uncorrectable errors.
  • It enhances data integrity by utilizing error correction codes and effectively managing uncorrectable data.
  • By providing a method to handle uncorrectable errors, the technology helps prevent data corruption and loss.

Original Abstract Submitted

An operation method of a memory controller, which is configured to control a memory module including a plurality of memory devices and at least one error correction code (ECC) device, is provided. The method includes reading a data set including user data stored in the plurality of memory devices and ECC data stored in the at least one ECC device, based on a read command and a first address, and writing uncorrectable data in a memory area, which is included in each of the plurality of memory devices and the at least one ECC device and corresponds to the first address, when an error of the user data is not corrected based on the ECC data.
