ENABLING FLEXIBLE POLICIES FOR BIOS SETTINGS ACCESS WITH ROLE-BASED AUTHENTICATION - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17876530 titled 'ENABLING FLEXIBLE POLICIES FOR BIOS SETTINGS ACCESS WITH ROLE-BASED AUTHENTICATION

Simplified Explanation

Methods are disclosed for enabling flexible policies for user access to BIOS attribute settings. These methods involve creating a BIOS attribute map that includes one or more configurable BIOS attributes, generating a role-based authorization table that associates an authorization role to each of the configurable BIOS attributes, and deploying the role-based authorization table to an information handling system.

When a user launches a BIOS attribute configuration tool, the system detects the user's associated role and retrieves the role-based authorization table. Based on this table and the user's role, the system identifies the configurable BIOS attributes that are available to the user. These configurable BIOS attributes can then be presented to the BIOS configuration tool, allowing the user to perform configuration operations for those attributes.

Potential applications of this technology include:

  • Enhancing security by providing role-based access control to BIOS attribute settings.
  • Streamlining BIOS configuration by presenting only relevant configurable attributes to each user.
  • Enabling customization of BIOS settings based on user roles or preferences.

Problems solved by this technology include:

  • Ensuring that only authorized users can access and modify BIOS attribute settings.
  • Simplifying the BIOS configuration process by eliminating unnecessary options for each user.
  • Providing a flexible and scalable solution for managing user access to BIOS attributes.

Benefits of this technology include:

  • Improved security and control over BIOS attribute settings.
  • Increased efficiency and ease of use in configuring BIOS settings.
  • Customization and personalization of BIOS configurations based on user roles or preferences.

Original Abstract Submitted

Disclosed methods for enabling flexible policies for user access to BIOS attribute settings perform operations including creating a BIOS attribute map encompassing one or more configurable BIOS attributes, generating a role-based authorization table associating an authorization role to each of the configurable BIOS attributes, and deploying the role-based authorization table to an information handling system. Responsive to a user launching a BIOS attribute configuration tool, a user role associated with the user is detected and the role-based authorization table is retrieved. Based on the role-based authorization table and the user role, configurable BIOS attributes for the user are identified. The configurable BIOS attributes may then be presented to the BIOS configuration to enable the user to perform configuration operations for the configurable BIOS attributes.
