METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR GROUPING DATA SLICES BASED ON DATA FILE TYPES FOR DATA SLICE BACKUP GENERATION - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17872541 titled 'METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR GROUPING DATA SLICES BASED ON DATA FILE TYPES FOR DATA SLICE BACKUP GENERATION

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a method for performing pre-backup tasks in a network attached storage (NAS) system. The method involves obtaining a snapshot request for an incremental backup of a file system from a backup manager. In response to the request, a NAS container is instantiated to obtain a snapshot of the file system, which is then provided to the NAS container. After providing the snapshot, a previously generated slice list and backup metadata associated with the file system are retrieved. Using the backup metadata and slice list, data types associated with each slice are identified. The slices are then grouped based on the data types and group criteria to generate slice groups. An updated slice list specifying the slices and slice groups is generated and provided to the backup manager.

  • The method involves obtaining a snapshot request for an incremental backup of a file system from a backup manager.

  • Managing and organizing backup data in a NAS environment.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Streamlining the process of performing pre-backup tasks in a NAS system.
  • Efficiently managing and organizing backup data.
  • Simplifying the generation of slice lists and grouping of backup data.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Improved backup efficiency and performance.
  • Reduced storage requirements for backups.
  • Simplified backup management and organization.
  • Enhanced data recovery capabilities.

Original Abstract Submitted

Techniques described herein relate to a method for performing pre-backup tasks. The method includes obtaining, by a proxy host, a snapshot request associated with an incremental backup of a file system stored in a network attached storage (NAS) from a backup manager; in response to obtaining the snapshot request: instantiating a NAS container to obtain a snapshot of the file system; providing the snapshot to the NAS container; after providing the snapshot to the NAS container: retrieving a previously generated slice list and backup metadata associated with the file system; identifying, using the backup metadata and the slice list, data types associated with each of the slices; grouping the slices based on the data types and group criteria to generate slice groups; generating an updated slice list specifying the slices and the slice groups; and providing the updated slice list to the backup manager.
