STORAGE DEVICE AND METHOD OF OPERATING THE SAME - A simplified explanation of the abstract
This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17857387 titled 'STORAGE DEVICE AND METHOD OF OPERATING THE SAME
Simplified Explanation
The patent application describes a storage device and operating method that includes a non-volatile memory with two areas for storing normal and trusted firmware images, a firmware table for storing information about these images, and a storage controller for controlling the memory and performing self-tests. Based on the self-test results, the storage controller can write trusted firmware images over a boot image. The firmware table also stores hash values calculated before and after encryption of the trusted firmware images.
- The storage device has a non-volatile memory with separate areas for normal and trusted firmware images.
- A firmware table stores information about the firmware images, including hash values.
- The storage controller controls the memory, performs self-tests, and writes trusted firmware images based on the self-test results.
- The firmware table stores hash values calculated before and after encryption of the trusted firmware images.
Potential Applications
- This technology can be used in various storage devices such as solid-state drives (SSDs), hard disk drives (HDDs), and flash drives.
- It can enhance the security and reliability of storage devices by allowing the storage controller to write trusted firmware images based on self-test results.
Problems Solved
- The technology solves the problem of ensuring the integrity and security of firmware images in storage devices.
- It addresses the need for a reliable and secure method of updating firmware in storage devices.
Benefits
- The separate areas for normal and trusted firmware images allow for easy management and updating of firmware.
- The self-test capability ensures that only trusted firmware images are written to the boot image, enhancing the security and reliability of the storage device.
- The storage controller's ability to write trusted firmware images based on self-test results improves the overall performance and functionality of the storage device.
Original Abstract Submitted
A storage device and an operating method are provided. The storage device includes a non-volatile memory comprising a first area configured to store a plurality of normal firmware images and a second area configured to store a plurality of trusted firmware images, a firmware table configured to store information about the plurality of normal firmware images and the plurality of trusted firmware images, and a storage controller configured to control the non-volatile memory, perform a self-test for the storage device and write at least one of the plurality of trusted firmware images over a boot image based on a result of the self-test. The firmware table is configured to store a first hash value calculated before encryption of the plurality of trusted firmware images, and a second hash value calculated after encryption of the plurality of trusted firmware images.
