REFRESH DETERMINATION USING MEMORY CELL PATTERNS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17852221 titled 'REFRESH DETERMINATION USING MEMORY CELL PATTERNS

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a system that includes a memory array with pattern cells and data cells. The pattern cells can only store a first logic state, while the data cells can store either the first logic state or a second logic state. The system also includes bias circuitry to apply voltages to the pattern cells and data cells, sensing circuitry to read the pattern cells, and a controller to control the operations.

  • The pattern cells in the memory array can only store a first logic state.
  • The data cells in the memory array can store either the first logic state or a second logic state.
  • Bias circuitry is used to apply voltages to the pattern cells and data cells.
  • Sensing circuitry is used to read the pattern cells.
  • The controller is responsible for applying voltages to the pattern cells, determining which pattern cells switch, refreshing a codeword based on the switched pattern cells, and applying the refresh to the codeword.

Potential Applications

  • This technology can be used in various memory systems, such as solid-state drives (SSDs) or computer memory modules.
  • It can be applied in data storage devices where efficient memory management and error correction are crucial.

Problems Solved

  • The system solves the problem of maintaining the integrity of data stored in memory cells.
  • It addresses the issue of data corruption or loss due to the degradation of memory cells over time.

Benefits

  • The system allows for efficient refreshing of codewords based on the switching of pattern cells.
  • It ensures the reliability and accuracy of stored data by refreshing the codewords as needed.
  • The technology can extend the lifespan of memory cells and improve the overall performance of memory systems.

Original Abstract Submitted

A system includes a memory array having pattern cells and data cells. The pattern cells are configured to store only a first logic state. The data cells are configured to store the first logic state or a second logic state. Bias circuitry is configured to apply voltages to the pattern cells and data cells. Sensing circuitry is configured to read the pattern cells. A controller is configured to apply, using the bias circuitry, first voltages to the pattern cells; determine, using the sensing circuitry, that at least a portion of the pattern cells switch; determine, based on the portion of the pattern cells that switch, to refresh a codeword; and apply, using the bias circuitry, the refresh of the codeword.
