Localization based on Detected Spatial Features - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17852114 titled 'Localization based on Detected Spatial Features

Simplified Explanation

Abstract

The patent application describes a method for localizing a device in an environment using spatial features. The method involves obtaining an estimate of the device's position in the environment and an environmental model of the surroundings. Based on this information, the method determines the location of a spatial feature in the environment and updates the device's position estimate accordingly.

Bullet Points

  • Method for localizing a device in an environment
  • Obtains an estimate of the device's pose (position and orientation)
  • Obtains an environmental model of the surroundings
  • Determines the location of a spatial feature in the environment
  • Updates the device's pose estimate based on the spatial feature's location

Potential Applications

  • Indoor navigation systems
  • Augmented reality applications
  • Robotics and autonomous systems
  • Virtual reality experiences
  • Location-based gaming

Problems Solved

  • Accurate localization of a device in an environment
  • Overcoming limitations of GPS-based positioning in indoor or obstructed areas
  • Enhancing the accuracy and reliability of spatial tracking systems

Benefits

  • Improved user experience in navigation and location-based applications
  • More precise and reliable positioning in indoor environments
  • Enables seamless integration of virtual and physical worlds
  • Enhances the capabilities of robotics and autonomous systems

Original Abstract Submitted

In one implementation, a method of localizing a device is performed at a device including one or more processors and non-transitory memory. The method includes obtaining an estimate of a pose of the device in an environment. The method includes obtaining an environmental model of the environment including a spatial feature in the environment defined by a first spatial feature location. The method includes determining a second spatial feature location of the spatial feature based on the estimate of the pose of the device. The method includes determining an updated estimate of the pose of the device based on the first spatial feature location and the second spatial feature location.
