DEVICE, METHOD, AND GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE FOR MANIPULATING WORKSPACE VIEWS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17843729 titled 'DEVICE, METHOD, AND GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE FOR MANIPULATING WORKSPACE VIEWS

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a multifunction device with a display and touch-sensitive surface that allows users to create and switch between multiple workspace views. Each workspace view can contain different content, including application windows.

  • The device initially displays only one workspace view on the display, hiding the others.
  • When the user performs a specific multitouch gesture on the touch-sensitive surface, the device replaces the current workspace view with a concurrent display of all the workspace views.
  • This allows users to easily switch between different sets of content and applications without cluttering the display.

Potential Applications

  • This technology can be applied to smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices to enhance multitasking capabilities.
  • It can be useful in professional settings where users need to work with multiple applications simultaneously.
  • It can improve productivity by providing a more efficient way to organize and switch between different tasks.

Problems Solved

  • Simplifies multitasking by providing a clear and organized way to manage multiple workspace views.
  • Reduces the need for constantly switching between different applications and windows, improving workflow efficiency.
  • Helps users avoid cluttered displays and easily locate and access specific content.

Benefits

  • Enhanced multitasking capabilities, allowing users to work with multiple applications and content simultaneously.
  • Improved organization and efficiency in managing different tasks and content.
  • Streamlined user experience with a clear and intuitive way to switch between workspace views.

Original Abstract Submitted

In some embodiments, a multifunction device with a display and a touch-sensitive surface creates a plurality of workspace views. A respective workspace view is configured to contain content assigned by a user to the respective workspace view. The content includes application windows. The device displays a first workspace view in the plurality of workspace views on the display without displaying other workspace views in the plurality of workspace views and detects a first multifinger gesture on the touch-sensitive surface. In response to detecting the first multifinger gesture on the touch-sensitive surface, the device replaces display of the first workspace view with concurrent display of the plurality of workspace views.
