MEMORY CONTROLLER MANAGING STRONG ERROR INFORMATION AND OPERATING METHOD THEREOF - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17839369 titled 'MEMORY CONTROLLER MANAGING STRONG ERROR INFORMATION AND OPERATING METHOD THEREOF

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a method for operating a memory controller that improves the accuracy of data read from memory cells. Here are the key points:

  • The method involves collecting both hard decision information and soft decision information from a monitoring unit.
  • Hard decision information is collected using a normal read level, while soft decision information is collected using one or more offset read levels that are different from the normal read level.
  • The collected hard and soft decision information is stored in a memory in the memory controller.
  • First strong error information is determined based on the hard and soft decision information and is also stored in the memory.
  • Second strong error information, specific to the monitoring unit, is updated in the memory after the first strong error information is stored.
  • The second strong error information is used to correct errors in data read in response to a read request from a host.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Memory controllers in various electronic devices, such as computers, smartphones, and tablets.
  • Data storage systems, including solid-state drives (SSDs) and memory cards.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Improves the accuracy of data read from memory cells, reducing the occurrence of errors.
  • Enables the correction of errors in data read from memory in real-time.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Enhanced reliability and data integrity in memory operations.
  • Improved performance and efficiency in data storage and retrieval.
  • Enables error correction without requiring additional hardware or complex algorithms.

Original Abstract Submitted

A method of operating a memory controller includes: collecting hard decision information based on data read from memory cells of a monitoring unit using a normal read level; collecting soft decision information based on data read from the monitoring unit using one or more offset read levels that are different from the normal read level; storing first strong error information determined based on the hard decision information and the soft decision information in a memory in the memory controller; and updating second strong error information determined for the monitoring unit in the memory after the first strong error information is stored. The second strong error information is used to correct an error in data read in response to a read request from a host.
