STORAGE DEVICE, STORAGE SYSTEM HAVING THE SAME AND METHOD OF OPERATING THE SAME - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17817785 titled 'STORAGE DEVICE, STORAGE SYSTEM HAVING THE SAME AND METHOD OF OPERATING THE SAME

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes storage systems that utilize blockchain networks to improve storage devices and systems. Some key points include:

  • The storage system consists of a host device, a switch device, and storage devices connected through the switch device.
  • The storage devices or the entire system can act as nodes in a blockchain network.
  • Blockchain is used for attestation of firmware, ensuring that it is operating normally.
  • The system enables device authentication, qualification verification for firmware, and firmware updates.

Potential Applications

This technology has potential applications in various industries, including:

  • Data storage and management: The use of blockchain can enhance the security and integrity of stored data.
  • Supply chain management: Blockchain can be utilized to track and verify the authenticity of products throughout the supply chain.
  • Internet of Things (IoT): The technology can provide secure and trusted communication between IoT devices and storage systems.
  • Financial services: Blockchain can be employed to improve the security and transparency of financial transactions.

Problems Solved

The technology addresses several challenges in storage systems and device management, such as:

  • Security vulnerabilities: Blockchain ensures the integrity and authenticity of firmware, reducing the risk of unauthorized access or tampering.
  • Trust and verification: The use of blockchain enables trustless verification of firmware and device authenticity, eliminating the need for centralized authorities.
  • Data integrity: By leveraging blockchain, the technology ensures the integrity of stored data, reducing the risk of data corruption or loss.

Benefits

The utilization of blockchain in storage systems offers several benefits, including:

  • Enhanced security: Blockchain provides a decentralized and tamper-resistant platform, improving the security of firmware, device authentication, and data storage.
  • Improved trust and transparency: The technology enables trustless verification, ensuring the authenticity and integrity of firmware and devices.
  • Simplified device management: Blockchain-based techniques streamline firmware updates, qualification verification, and device authentication processes, reducing complexity and improving efficiency.

Original Abstract Submitted

Storage systems including a host device, a switch device, and storage devices connected to the host device through the switch device are described. Moreover, techniques for operating a host device, a switch device, and/or one or more storage devices are also described. One or more aspects of the present disclosure may provide for improved storage devices and systems via implementation of blockchain networks. In some cases, a storage device itself may be a node of a blockchain network, or a system including a storage device may be a node of a blockchain network. One or more aspects of the present disclosure provide for attestation of firmware (e.g., qualification verification to identify whether the firmware is operating normally) performed using the blockchain. Further, one or more aspects of the present disclosure describe techniques for performing device authentication between devices, for performing qualification verification for firmware, for performing firmware updates, etc.
