DISPLAY DEVICE DETERMINING REFERENCE FREQUENCY BASED ON PREVIOUS FRAME FREQUENCY, AND METHOD OF OPERATING THE SAME - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17814613 titled 'DISPLAY DEVICE DETERMINING REFERENCE FREQUENCY BASED ON PREVIOUS FRAME FREQUENCY, AND METHOD OF OPERATING THE SAME

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a display device that includes a display panel with pixels and a panel driver to drive the panel. The panel driver receives input image data at a variable input frame frequency and adjusts data voltages applied to the pixels to achieve a desired luminance.

  • The display device includes a display panel with pixels and a panel driver.
  • The panel driver receives input image data at a variable input frame frequency.
  • The panel driver monitors the variable input frame frequency and stores it as a previous frame frequency.
  • A reference frequency is determined based on the previous frame frequency.
  • A reference luminance, which is the desired luminance of the display panel at the reference frequency, is determined.
  • Data voltages applied to the pixels are adjusted by the panel driver to achieve the reference luminance at the variable input frame frequency.

Potential Applications

  • This technology can be used in various display devices such as televisions, computer monitors, and mobile devices.
  • It can improve the visual experience by maintaining consistent luminance across different frame frequencies.

Problems Solved

  • In traditional display devices, the luminance may vary when the frame frequency changes, leading to an inconsistent visual experience.
  • This technology solves the problem by adjusting the data voltages applied to the pixels to achieve a desired luminance at different frame frequencies.

Benefits

  • The display device provides a consistent luminance regardless of the input frame frequency.
  • Users can enjoy a high-quality visual experience with accurate and consistent colors.
  • The technology improves the overall viewing experience by reducing visual distractions caused by changes in luminance.

Original Abstract Submitted

A display device includes a display panel including a plurality of pixels, and a panel driver configured to drive the display panel. The panel driver receives input image data at a variable input frame frequency, stores the variable input frame frequency as a previous frame frequency by monitoring the variable input frame frequency, determines a reference frequency based on the previous frame frequency, determines a reference luminance as a luminance of the display panel at the reference frequency, and adjusts data voltages applied to the plurality of pixels such that a luminance of the display panel at the variable input frame frequency becomes the reference luminance.
