Method for Controlling Vehicle HVAC System - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17813381 titled 'Method for Controlling Vehicle HVAC System

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a method for controlling the HVAC system of a vehicle by determining a target subcooled temperature of the refrigerant discharged from the compressor, calculating the change in enthalpy of the refrigerant during condensing and subcooling, calculating the change in enthalpy of air passing over the condenser, and calculating the required fan duty of the cooling fan to blow air to the condenser.

  • The method determines the target subcooled temperature of the refrigerant based on its temperature and pressure at the compressor outlet.
  • It calculates the change in enthalpy of the refrigerant during the condensing and subcooling process.
  • The change in enthalpy of air passing over the condenser is also calculated.
  • The required fan duty of the cooling fan is then determined based on the calculated change in air enthalpy.
  • The cooling fan blows air to the condenser to aid in the cooling process.

Potential Applications

  • This method can be applied to control the HVAC systems of vehicles, ensuring efficient cooling and temperature control.
  • It can be used in various types of vehicles, including cars, trucks, buses, and other mobile applications.

Problems Solved

  • The method solves the problem of inefficient cooling and temperature control in vehicle HVAC systems.
  • It optimizes the cooling process by accurately determining the target subcooled temperature and calculating the required fan duty.

Benefits

  • Improved energy efficiency of the HVAC system, leading to reduced fuel consumption in vehicles.
  • Enhanced cooling performance, providing better comfort for vehicle occupants.
  • Increased reliability and lifespan of the HVAC system components due to optimized operation.

Original Abstract Submitted

An embodiment method for controlling a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system of a vehicle includes determining a target subcooled temperature of a refrigerant based on a temperature and a pressure of the refrigerant discharged from an outlet of a compressor when the compressor operates, calculating a change in enthalpy of the refrigerant based on the determined target subcooled temperature in a process of condensing and subcooling the refrigerant, calculating a change in enthalpy of air passing over an exterior surface of a condenser based on the calculated refrigerant enthalpy change, and calculating a required fan duty of a cooling fan based on the calculated air enthalpy change, wherein the cooling fan is configured to blow the air to the condenser.
