Vehicle and Method of Controlling the Same - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17807301 titled 'Vehicle and Method of Controlling the Same

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a vehicle system that uses augmented reality (AR) to provide route guidance to a destination. Here are the key points:

  • The vehicle is equipped with a communication module, a display module, and an image sensor.
  • The image sensor captures a front image of the vehicle.
  • The vehicle's controller uses a GPS signal received through the communication module to determine when the vehicle enters a predetermined range of a destination.
  • The controller compares a feature point in the front image with point cloud map information to predict the vehicle's position.
  • The controller then compares the predicted position with the GPS signal's predicted position to determine the actual position of the vehicle.
  • The display module is controlled to show an AR image that provides route guidance to the destination based on the determined position of the vehicle.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Navigation systems in vehicles can use this technology to provide more accurate and intuitive route guidance to drivers.
  • Delivery services can use this technology to help drivers find their destinations more efficiently.
  • Emergency services can use this technology to guide vehicles to their destinations quickly and accurately.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Inaccurate GPS signals can sometimes lead to incorrect positioning of vehicles. This technology helps to correct the position using image analysis.
  • Traditional navigation systems may not provide enough visual information to guide drivers effectively. AR images can enhance the guidance experience.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Improved accuracy in determining the position of the vehicle, even in areas with poor GPS signal.
  • Enhanced route guidance experience for drivers, leading to safer and more efficient navigation.
  • Potential for reducing driver distraction by providing visual guidance directly on the vehicle's display.

Original Abstract Submitted

In an embodiment a vehicle includes a communication module, a display module, an image sensor configured to acquire a front image of the vehicle and a controller configured to determine that the vehicle enters a predetermined range of a destination based on a global positioning system (GPS) signal received through the communication module, compare a feature point of the front image of the vehicle with point cloud map information to determine a first predicted position of the vehicle, based on a difference between the first predicted position and a second predicted position of the vehicle indicated by the GPS signal, determine one of the first predicted position and the second predicted position as a position of the vehicle and control the display module to display an augmented reality (AR) image for performing a route guidance to the destination based on the determined position of the vehicle.
