METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR IMPROVING PLMN SELECTION BASED ON REQUIRED SERVICES/SLICES FOR ROAMING SUBSCRIBERS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17799542 titled 'METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR IMPROVING PLMN SELECTION BASED ON REQUIRED SERVICES/SLICES FOR ROAMING SUBSCRIBERS

Simplified Explanation

The present disclosure is about a method and system for steering of roaming (SoR) information in a pre-5G or 5G communication system. This system supports higher data rates beyond the 4G LTE system.

  • The method involves registering a user equipment (UE) in a visited public land mobile network (VPLMN) using an access and mobility management function (AMF) device.
  • The method includes requesting a unified data management (UDM) server of a home public land mobile network (HPLMN) to provide subscription data.
  • The method further involves requesting SoR information from an application function (AF) device by the UDM server. This request includes information about single-network slice selection assistance information (S-NSSAI) requested or subscribed by the UE.
  • The method includes determining the SoR information to be provided to the UDM server and transmitting it to the UE.
  • Subscribers can use the SoR information to connect to a VPLMN that offers the specific services they are interested in.

Potential Applications

This technology can be applied in various scenarios, including:

  • Roaming subscribers can easily find and connect to VPLMNs that provide the specific services they require.
  • Service providers can efficiently steer roaming subscribers to VPLMNs that offer the desired services, improving customer satisfaction.
  • Network operators can optimize network resources by directing roaming subscribers to VPLMNs that have available capacity for the requested services.

Problems Solved

This technology solves several problems in roaming scenarios:

  • Simplifies the process for roaming subscribers to find and connect to VPLMNs that offer the services they need.
  • Reduces the time and effort required for service providers to steer roaming subscribers to the appropriate VPLMNs.
  • Improves network resource utilization by directing roaming subscribers to VPLMNs with available capacity for the requested services.

Benefits

The benefits of this technology include:

  • Enhanced user experience for roaming subscribers by easily accessing the desired services.
  • Improved efficiency for service providers in steering roaming subscribers to suitable VPLMNs.
  • Optimal utilization of network resources by directing roaming subscribers to VPLMNs with available capacity for the requested services.

Original Abstract Submitted

The present disclosure relates to a pre-5-Generation (5G) or 5G communication system to be provided for supporting higher data rates Beyond 4-Generation (4G) communication system such as Long Term Evolution (LTE). The present disclosure relates to a method and system for steering of roaming (SoR) information based on required services for roaming subscribers. The method includes registering the UE in a visited public land mobile network (VPLMN) by an access and mobility management function (AMF) device. The method comprises requesting a unified data management (UDM) server of a home public land mobile network (HPLMN) to provide subscription data. The method further comprises requesting by the UDM server SoR information from an application function (AF) device, wherein the request includes information related to single-network slice selection assistance information (S-NSSAI) either requested or subscribed by the UE. The method comprises the steps of determining the SoR information to be provided to the UDM server and transmitting the SoR information to the UE. The subscribers can use the SoR information for latching onto a VPLMN that provides the service they are interested in.
