CONFIGURATION OF BUILD ENVELOPES - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17768805 titled 'CONFIGURATION OF BUILD ENVELOPES

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a system, method, and computer program product for generating three-dimensional models for use in additive manufacturing or 3D printing systems. The system takes object model data defining one or more objects to be built and generates a three-dimensional model for a protective structure to surround the objects. Users are provided with selectable configuration options for the protective structure, and a three-dimensional model is automatically generated based on user selections.

  • Explanation of the patent/innovation:

- System, method, and computer program product for generating three-dimensional models for additive manufacturing or 3D printing systems - Input object model data to generate a protective structure around objects - User interface with selectable configuration options for the protective structure - Automatic generation of a three-dimensional model based on user selections

Potential Applications

This technology can be applied in various industries such as aerospace, automotive, medical, and consumer goods for creating customized protective structures for objects produced through additive manufacturing or 3D printing.

Problems Solved

- Ensures the protection of delicate or intricate objects during the manufacturing process - Allows for the creation of tailored protective structures based on user preferences - Streamlines the design process for incorporating protective elements into 3D printed objects

Benefits

- Improved safety and durability of 3D printed objects - Enhanced customization and personalization options for protective structures - Increased efficiency in the additive manufacturing process

Potential Commercial Applications

Optimizing the production of high-value or complex objects in industries such as aerospace, healthcare, and consumer electronics by incorporating custom protective structures during the manufacturing process.

Possible Prior Art

Prior art may include similar systems or methods for generating protective structures around objects in additive manufacturing or 3D printing processes. Research into existing patents or publications in the field of additive manufacturing may reveal relevant prior art.

Unanswered Questions

How does this technology impact the cost of additive manufacturing processes?

The abstract does not provide information on how the implementation of this technology may affect the overall cost of additive manufacturing. Understanding the cost implications of incorporating protective structures into the manufacturing process is crucial for assessing the economic feasibility of this innovation.

What are the limitations of the user-selectable configuration options for the protective structure?

The abstract mentions that users are provided with selectable configuration options for the protective structure, but it does not elaborate on any potential limitations or constraints of these options. Exploring the boundaries of user customization and the extent to which protective structures can be tailored would provide valuable insights into the practicality of this technology.

Original Abstract Submitted

Provided are a system, method and computer program product for generating three dimensional models for use by an additive manufacturing or 3D printing system, in which object model data defining one or more objects to be built by a three-dimensional printing apparatus is input and used to generate a three dimensional model for a protective structure to surround the one or more objects. A user is provided with selectable configuration options for the protective structure. The method includes presenting, via a user interface, selectable configuration options for a protective structure to be built around the one or more objects by the three-dimensional printing apparatus. In response to user selection of one or more configuration options via the user interface, a three dimensional model for the protective structure is automatically generated.
