Background Noise Recorder - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17716724 titled 'Background Noise Recorder

Simplified Explanation

An electronic device is described that uses wireless circuitry to measure the range between the device and an external object. The device has a transmit antenna that sends out signals and a receive antenna that picks up the reflected signals.

  • The wireless circuitry can detect the range by analyzing the transmitted and reflected signals.
  • When the range exceeds a certain threshold, the device records the background noise using the transmitted and received signals.
  • When the range is below another threshold, the device uses the recorded background noise to accurately measure the range based on the reflected signals.

Potential Applications

  • This technology can be used in proximity sensors for electronic devices to accurately measure the distance between the device and nearby objects.
  • It can be applied in robotics to enable precise object detection and avoidance.
  • This innovation can also be used in virtual reality or augmented reality systems to enhance user interactions by accurately tracking the position of objects in close proximity.

Problems Solved

  • The technology solves the problem of accurately measuring range within an ultra-short range domain, even when the device is placed in different cases or on different surfaces.
  • It addresses the issue of background noise affecting range detection by recording and using the background noise to improve accuracy.

Benefits

  • The device can accurately measure range within an ultra-short range domain, providing precise distance measurements for various applications.
  • By recording and using background noise, the technology improves the accuracy of range detection, even in different environments.
  • This innovation allows for more reliable and consistent performance of proximity sensors, robotics, and virtual reality systems.

Original Abstract Submitted

An electronic device may include wireless circuitry with a transmit antenna that transmits signals and a receive antenna that receives reflected signals. The wireless circuitry may detect a range between the device and an external object based on the transmitted signals and the reflected signals. When the range exceeds a first threshold, the wireless circuitry may use the transmitted signals and received signals to record background noise. When the range is less than a second threshold value, the wireless circuitry may detect the range based on the reflected signals and the recorded background noise. This may allow the range to be accurately measured within an ultra-short range domain even when the device is placed in different device cases, placed on different surfaces, etc.
