MOBILITY STATE-BASED SDT PROCEDURES - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17593229 titled 'MOBILITY STATE-BASED SDT PROCEDURES

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes systems and methods for small data transmissions (SDTs) between a user equipment (UE) and a network. Here are the key points:

  • The UE determines whether to perform an SDT procedure by comparing its own mobility state to an SDT mobility state condition provided by the network.
  • The UE also considers the size of user plane (UP) data to be sent with the SDT procedure and compares it to an SDT mobility-based data amount threshold provided by the network.
  • When the UE enters an RRC_INACTIVE state, it starts a validity timer for the SDT mobility state condition and/or SDT mobility-based data amount threshold. These conditions are invalidated once the timer expires.
  • The UE reports its determined mobility state to the network during an SDT procedure, allowing the network to select configuration parameters for SDT procedures accordingly.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Mobile communication networks
  • Internet of Things (IoT) devices
  • Smart devices and sensors

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Efficient management of small data transmissions in mobile networks
  • Optimizing network resources for SDTs based on UE mobility and data size
  • Improving overall network performance and user experience

Benefits of this technology:

  • Reduced signaling overhead for small data transmissions
  • Improved network efficiency and resource allocation
  • Enhanced user experience with faster and more reliable SDTs

Original Abstract Submitted

Systems and methods for small data transmissions (SDTs) between a user equipment (UE) and a network are disclosed herein. In some embodiments, the UE determines whether to perform an SDT procedure by comparing its own mobility state to an SDT mobility state condition provided by the network. The UE may also determine whether to perform the SDT procedure by comparing the size of user plane (UP) data to be sent with the SDT procedure to an SDT mobility-based data amount threshold provided by the network. Upon entering an RRC_INACTIVE state, the UE may start a validity timer relative to any such SDT mobility state condition and/or SDT mobility-based data amount threshold, and invalidate these once the validity timer expires. In some disclosed embodiments, the UE reports its determined mobility state to the network during an SDT procedure so that the network can accordingly select configuration parameters for SDT procedures.
