ELECTRICAL SUBMERSIBLE PUMP LUBRICANT AND COOLANT - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17551000 titled 'ELECTRICAL SUBMERSIBLE PUMP LUBRICANT AND COOLANT

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a system and method for extracting hydrocarbons from a subterranean well using an electrical submersible pump assembly. Here are the key points:

  • The pump assembly includes a motor with a stator located within a motor housing.
  • The stator has an interior cavity, and a rotor assembly is located within this cavity.
  • The rotor assembly consists of a rotor shaft, a rotor member, and an intermediate rotor bearing assembly.
  • A liner, which is a thin walled member, is secured to the motor housing and seals the stator body from the wellbore fluid.
  • The liner has an inner bore where a rotor cavity is located.
  • A membrane made of a material that can bind a component of the wellbore fluid is placed within the liner.
  • A hydrophobic fluid is circulated within the rotor cavity.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Extraction of hydrocarbons from subterranean wells.
  • Oil and gas production in offshore or onshore drilling operations.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Prevents contamination of the motor and stator by wellbore fluid.
  • Enhances the efficiency and performance of the electrical submersible pump assembly.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Improved reliability and longevity of the pump assembly.
  • Increased production rates and efficiency in hydrocarbon extraction.
  • Reduced maintenance and downtime for the pump assembly.

Original Abstract Submitted

Systems and methods for producing hydrocarbons from a subterranean well include an electrical submersible pump assembly with a motor, where the motor has a stator located within a motor housing. The stator has a stator body with an interior cavity. A rotor assembly is located within the interior cavity of the stator. The rotor assembly includes a rotor shaft, a rotor member, and an intermediate rotor bearing assembly. A liner is located along an interior surface of the interior cavity, the liner being a thin walled member that is secured to the motor housing and seals the stator body from a wellbore fluid. A rotor cavity is located within an inner bore of the liner. A membrane is located within the liner, the membrane formed of a material operable to bind a component of the wellbore fluid. A hydrophobic fluid is circulating within the rotor cavity.
