TECHNIQUES TO FACILITATE POWER SAVING WHILE MONITORING PAGING AND WAKEUP SIGNALS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17457410 titled 'TECHNIQUES TO FACILITATE POWER SAVING WHILE MONITORING PAGING AND WAKEUP SIGNALS

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a system and method for saving power while monitoring for paging messages and wakeup signals in wireless communication devices.

  • The method involves receiving information about an active bandwidth part (BWP) and the duration of a discontinuous reception (DRX) cycle.
  • The system then monitors a subset of the active BWP, known as the first bandwidth, for a wakeup signal (WUS) at a specific time during the DRX cycle called the WUS occasion.
  • If the WUS is received at the WUS occasion, the device transitions to an awake state for the duration specified in the DRX cycle.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Wireless communication devices such as smartphones, tablets, and IoT devices can benefit from this power-saving method.
  • It can be used in various wireless communication standards like 5G, LTE, and others.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Power consumption is reduced by selectively monitoring a subset of the active BWP instead of continuously monitoring the entire bandwidth.
  • The device can still receive important wakeup signals while conserving power during idle periods.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Extended battery life for wireless communication devices.
  • Efficient use of network resources by reducing unnecessary monitoring.
  • Improved user experience with uninterrupted reception of important wakeup signals.

Original Abstract Submitted

Apparatus, methods, and computer-readable media for facilitating power savings while monitoring for paging messages and wakeup signals are disclosed herein. An example method for wireless communication at a UE includes receiving an indication of an active BWP associated with an ON duration of a DRX cycle. The example method also includes monitoring a first bandwidth for a WUS at a WUS occasion of the DRX cycle, the first bandwidth corresponding to a subset of the active BWP. The example method also includes transitioning to an awake state for the ON duration when the WUS is received at the WUS occasion.
