OPTIMIZING QUERY PERFORMANCE IN VIRTUAL DATABASE - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17455532 titled 'OPTIMIZING QUERY PERFORMANCE IN VIRTUAL DATABASE

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes methods, computer program products, and systems for optimizing the performance and reducing the cost of processing queries in a virtual database. Here is a simplified explanation of the abstract:

  • The methods involve collecting real-time system statistics from a remote platform running a remote data source in a virtual database.
  • Real-time data source statistics on one or more data source objects are also gathered.
  • The global catalog of the virtual database is updated with the real-time system statistics and data source statistics.
  • An access plan to process a query to the virtual database is optimized using the real-time system and data source statistics.
  • A response is produced based on the optimized access plan, resulting in improved performance and reduced cost.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Database management systems
  • Cloud computing platforms
  • Big data analytics
  • Distributed computing environments

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Inefficient query processing in virtual databases
  • Lack of real-time system and data source statistics for optimization
  • High costs associated with query processing in virtual databases

Benefits of this technology:

  • Improved performance of query processing in virtual databases
  • Reduced cost of query processing in virtual databases
  • Enhanced optimization based on real-time system and data source statistics

Original Abstract Submitted

Methods, computer program products, and systems are presented. The methods include, for instance: collecting real time system statistics on a system environment in a remote platform running a remote data source amongst a plurality of remote data sources of a virtual database. Real time data source statistics on one or more data source objects from the remote data source of the virtual database is also gathered. A global catalog of the virtual database is updated with the real time system statistics and the real time data source statistics. An access plan to process a query to the virtual database is optimized based on the real time system statistics and the real time data source statistics and a response is produced based on the access plan, with improved performance and reduced cost.
