MEASUREMENT ENHANCEMENT IN RADIO RESOURCE CONTROL (RRC) CONNECTED FOR BASE STATION (BS) - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17442683 titled 'MEASUREMENT ENHANCEMENT IN RADIO RESOURCE CONTROL (RRC) CONNECTED FOR BASE STATION (BS)

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes techniques for improving the measurement capabilities of a Base Station (BS) in a cellular network. These techniques involve configuring the User Equipment (UE) with Carrier Aggregation (CA) and/or Dual Connectivity (DC) to enhance the measurement process.

  • The BS receives a measurement request from the UE Assistance Information message.
  • The BS transmits a first RRCReconfiguration message to the UE, including a measConfig IE (Information Element).
  • The UE performs measurements on different sets of frequencies, including serving frequencies and non-serving frequencies associated with neighboring cells.
  • The UE sends a MeasurementReport message to the BS, indicating the measurements performed.
  • The BS transmits a second RRCReconfiguration message to the UE, configuring it with at least one set of frequencies.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Improving the measurement capabilities of Base Stations in cellular networks.
  • Enhancing the configuration of User Equipment with Carrier Aggregation and Dual Connectivity.
  • Optimizing the performance and efficiency of cellular networks.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Limited measurement capabilities of Base Stations in cellular networks.
  • Inefficient configuration of User Equipment for measurement purposes.
  • Difficulty in obtaining accurate and comprehensive measurement reports from User Equipment.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Improved measurement accuracy and reliability.
  • Enhanced configuration flexibility for User Equipment.
  • Better optimization of cellular network performance.

Original Abstract Submitted

Techniques discussed herein facilitate Base Station (BS) enhancements to measurement by a RRC Connected mode User Equipment (UE) for configuration of Carrier Aggregation (CA) and/or Dual Connectivity (DC). One example embodiment comprises a BS device comprising a processor configured to perform operations comprising: receiving a UE Assistance Information message comprising a measurement request; transmitting a first RRCReconfiguration message comprising a measConfig IE; receiving a MeasurementReport message from a UE that indicates one or more measurements on one or more sets of frequencies, wherein the one or more sets of frequencies comprise a set of serving frequencies for one of a serving cell or the neighboring cell and a set of non-serving frequencies for the UE, wherein the set of non-serving frequencies are associated with the neighboring cell; and transmitting a second RRCReconfiguration message that configures the UE with at least one set of the one or more sets of frequencies.
