POWER AMPLIFIER WITH OVERVOLTAGE PROTECTION IN INPUT MATCHING STAGE - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17390166 titled 'POWER AMPLIFIER WITH OVERVOLTAGE PROTECTION IN INPUT MATCHING STAGE

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a patent application for methods and apparatus to limit the input voltage of a power amplifier in a wireless device's RF front-end. The invention includes a power amplifier, a matching circuit, and an overvoltage protection circuit.

  • The invention is designed to enhance the ruggedness performance of a power amplifier in a wireless device's RF front-end.
  • It achieves this by limiting the input voltage (swing) of the power amplifier.
  • The power amplifier is coupled to a matching circuit, which is in turn coupled to an overvoltage protection circuit.
  • The overvoltage protection circuit helps prevent excessive voltage from reaching the power amplifier.
  • By limiting the input voltage, the power amplifier is protected from potential damage caused by overvoltage.

Potential Applications

  • This technology can be applied in the design of power amplifiers for wireless devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and IoT devices.
  • It can be used in various wireless communication systems, including cellular networks, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and more.
  • The invention can be implemented in both consumer and industrial wireless devices.

Problems Solved

  • Power amplifiers in RF front-ends are susceptible to damage from excessive voltage.
  • Overvoltage can occur due to various factors, such as signal interference, power surges, or faulty components.
  • This technology solves the problem of protecting power amplifiers from overvoltage, thereby enhancing their ruggedness performance and overall reliability.

Benefits

  • Enhanced ruggedness performance of power amplifiers in wireless devices.
  • Protection against potential damage caused by overvoltage.
  • Improved reliability and longevity of wireless devices.
  • Enables the use of higher power levels without compromising the integrity of the power amplifier.

Original Abstract Submitted

Methods and apparatus for limiting the input voltage (swing) of a power amplifier, such as a power amplifier in a radio frequency (RF) front-end of a wireless device. One example radio frequency front-end circuit generally includes a power amplifier, a matching circuit having an output coupled to an input of the power amplifier, and an overvoltage protection circuit coupled to the matching circuit. With an overvoltage protection circuit coupled to the matching circuit in this manner, the power amplifier may have enhanced ruggedness performance.
