IRAT RRC RE-ESTABLISHMENT PROCEDURE AND IRAT RESUME PROCEDURE - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 17310956 titled 'IRAT RRC RE-ESTABLISHMENT PROCEDURE AND IRAT RESUME PROCEDURE

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a method for handling a Radio Link Failure (RLF) in a wireless communication system by a User Equipment (UE). The method involves the following steps:

  • Detecting an RLF at the UE in a first cell associated with a first Radio Access Technology (RAT).
  • Selecting a second cell associated with a second RAT through a cell selection procedure.
  • Detecting the connection of a 5G Core Network (5GC).
  • Determining if a timer is running in the UE.
  • Performing an Inter-RAT (IRAT) Radio Resource Control (RRC) re-establishment procedure on the second cell when an RLF occurs on the first cell associated with the first RAT, based on the determination that the timer is running in the UE.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Wireless communication systems that support multiple RATs.
  • Handover and re-establishment procedures in cellular networks.
  • Improving the reliability and performance of UE connections.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Radio Link Failures can occur due to various reasons, such as signal degradation or interference, leading to a loss of communication between the UE and the network. This method provides a solution for handling RLFs by quickly switching to a different cell and re-establishing the connection.
  • The method also considers the presence of a 5GC, which is the core network for 5G systems, ensuring compatibility and seamless transition between different generations of cellular networks.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Enhanced reliability and robustness of wireless communication systems.
  • Improved user experience by minimizing disruptions and downtime.
  • Efficient utilization of available network resources by selecting the most suitable cell and RAT for re-establishment.

Original Abstract Submitted

Embodiments herein achieve a method for handling a RLF in a wireless communication system by a UE. The method includes detecting the RLF at the UE associated with a first cell that is associated with a first RAT. Further, the method includes selecting a second cell, associated with a second RAT, by performing a cell selection procedure. Further, the method includes detecting that a 5GC is connected. Further, the method includes determining whether a timer is running in the UE. Further, the method includes performing an IRAT RRC re-establishment procedure on the second cell when the RLF is occurred on the first cell associated with the first RAT in response to determining that the timer is running in the UE.
