Sensor Based Map Generation and Routing - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 16972447 titled 'Sensor Based Map Generation and Routing

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a technology for generating a route through a geographic area using an unoccupied cell map. This map identifies areas that are not covered by light detection and ranging (LiDAR) returns.

  • The technology generates an unoccupied cell map that shows unoccupied portions of a geographic area.
  • Route request data is received, which includes a request for a route from a starting location to one or more destination locations within the geographic area.
  • The unoccupied cell map is accessed based on the route request data.
  • A route is generated based on the unoccupied cell map, including the unoccupied cells between the starting location and the destination locations.
  • Indications associated with the route are generated.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • Navigation systems: The technology can be used in GPS navigation systems to generate routes that avoid areas with LiDAR returns, such as buildings or obstacles.
  • Autonomous vehicles: Autonomous vehicles can use this technology to plan routes that avoid areas with LiDAR returns, ensuring safe and efficient navigation.
  • Delivery services: Delivery companies can utilize this technology to optimize their routes and avoid areas with LiDAR returns, reducing delivery time and improving efficiency.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • Avoiding obstacles: The technology helps in generating routes that avoid areas with LiDAR returns, ensuring that vehicles or pedestrians do not encounter obstacles during their journey.
  • Efficient navigation: By utilizing the unoccupied cell map, the technology can generate routes that are optimized for efficiency, saving time and resources.
  • Safety: The technology contributes to safer navigation by avoiding areas with LiDAR returns, reducing the risk of accidents or collisions.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Improved navigation: The technology provides more accurate and efficient routes by considering the unoccupied cell map, resulting in improved navigation experiences.
  • Time and cost savings: By generating optimized routes, the technology can save time and resources for users, such as reducing fuel consumption or delivery time.
  • Enhanced safety: Avoiding areas with LiDAR returns enhances safety for both vehicles and pedestrians, reducing the risk of accidents or damage.

Original Abstract Submitted

Methods, systems, devices, and tangible non-transitory computer readable media for generating a route through a geographic area are provided. The disclosed technology can generate an unoccupied cell map. The unoccupied cell map can include cells that are associated with unoccupied portions of a geographic area that are not associated with light detection and ranging (LiDAR) returns. Further, route request data that is associated with a request for a route from a starting location to one or more destination locations within the geographic area can be received. Based on the route request data, the unoccupied cell map can be accessed. A route, based on the unoccupied cell map, can then be generated. Furthermore, the route can include the unoccupied cells between a starting location and one or more destination locations within the geographic area. Indications associated with the route can then be generated.
