A communication method and apparatus are provided. The method includes: An access network device sends first information to a terminal device, where the first information indicates a layer quantity of a PUSCH, and the layer quantity of the PUSCH is not less than 2; the terminal device determines a first MCS table based on the layer quantity of the PUSCH; and then the terminal device sends the PUSCH to the access network device based on the first MCS table. The access network device demodulates the PUSCH based on the first MCS table.
