PRODUCTION OF PU FOAMS USING RECYCLED POLYOLS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18575876 titled 'PRODUCTION OF PU FOAMS USING RECYCLED POLYOLS

The patent application describes a process for producing PU foams using recycled polyols, catalysts, foam stabilizers, and blowing agents.

  • The process involves reacting recycled polyols with isocyanate components in the presence of catalysts that catalyze various reactions.
  • The recycled polyol used contains specific diamines in a total amount ranging from 0.00001% to 0.4% by weight.
  • The process aims to produce PU foams with improved sustainability by utilizing recycled materials.
  • By incorporating recycled polyols, the process reduces the environmental impact of foam production.
  • The use of specific diamines in the recycled polyol helps enhance the properties of the resulting PU foams.

Potential Applications: - Manufacturing of sustainable PU foams for various industries such as construction, automotive, and furniture. - Production of eco-friendly insulation materials for buildings and appliances.

Problems Solved: - Reducing the reliance on virgin materials in PU foam production. - Addressing environmental concerns related to waste management and resource depletion.

Benefits: - Lower carbon footprint due to the use of recycled polyols. - Cost-effective production process. - Enhanced properties of PU foams with the incorporation of specific diamines.

Original Abstract Submitted

A process for producing PU foams using recycled polyols can be performed by reacting at least one polyol component, which has a recycled polyol, with at least one isocyanate component in the presence of one or more catalysts that catalyse the isocyanate-polyol and/or isocyanate-water and/or isocyanate trimerization reactions. The process also includes at least one foam stabilizer and optionally one or more chemical or physical blowing agents. The employed recycled polyol has toluene 2,4-diamine, toluene 2,6-diamine, 2,2′-diaminodiphenylmethane, 2,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane and/or 4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane, and specifically in a total amount of 0.00001% to 0.4% by weight, preferably 0.00002% to 0.2% by weight, more preferably 0.00005% to 0.1% by weight, based on the total recycled polyol.
