ACTIVE MATERIAL - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240234721 titled 'ACTIVE MATERIAL

The present disclosure focuses on providing an active material that suppresses expansion upon intercalation of a metal ion such as a Li ion.

  • Active material comprises a silicon clathrate type crystal phase.
  • Active material includes a Na element, a Si element, and a metal element (M) with an ion radius larger than the Si element.
  • Proportion of the M element to the total of the Si element and the M element is between 0.1 atm % and 5 atm %.
    • Potential Applications:**

- Energy storage in batteries - Electric vehicles - Portable electronic devices

    • Problems Solved:**

- Expansion of active material upon intercalation of metal ions - Improved stability and performance of batteries

    • Benefits:**

- Enhanced battery performance - Longer lifespan of batteries - Increased energy storage capacity

    • Commercial Applications:**

Title: Advanced Battery Technology for Energy Storage Solutions This technology can be utilized in the development of high-performance batteries for various applications, including electric vehicles, renewable energy storage systems, and portable electronics. The market implications include increased demand for efficient energy storage solutions and the potential for advancements in the renewable energy sector.

    • Questions about the Technology:**

1. How does the presence of the M element help suppress expansion in the active material? 2. What are the specific advantages of using a silicon clathrate type crystal phase in the active material?

Original Abstract Submitted

a main object of the present disclosure is to provide an active material wherein an expansion upon intercalation of a metal ion such as a li ion is suppressed. the present disclosure achieves the object by providing an active material comprising a silicon clathrate type crystal phase, and the active material includes a na element, a si element and a m element that is a metal element with an ion radius larger than the si element, and a proportion of the m element to a total of the si element and the m element is 0.1 atm % or more and 5 atm % or less.
