DRIVING ASSIST APPARATUS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 20240123904 titled 'DRIVING ASSIST APPARATUS

Simplified Explanation

The driving assist apparatus described in the patent application includes a photographing part mounted in side mirrors that can switch between two states: one where the driver can see the vehicle's rear side and one where the protruding margin of the side mirrors is minimized. The control part uses the images captured by the photographing part to provide driving assistance, determining the state of the side mirrors and either continuing or suspending the driving assist based on this information.

Unanswered Questions

How does the apparatus differentiate between the two states of the side mirrors based on the images captured?

The patent application does not provide specific details on the method used to determine the state of the side mirrors from the captured images.

Are there any limitations to the effectiveness of the driving assist based on the state of the side mirrors?

The patent application does not address any potential limitations or challenges that may arise in the functionality of the driving assist system based on the state of the side mirrors.

Original Abstract Submitted

a driving assist apparatus includes a photographing part mounted in side mirrors switchable between a first state where a driver can see a vehicle rear side and a second state where a protruding margin of the side mirrors in a width direction of the self-vehicle is small, and having different photographable areas between the first and second states. a control part performs a driving assist based on images photographed by the photographing part. the control part is configured to judge whether the side minors are in the first or second state based on the images, and to continue the driving assist when the side minors are judged to be in the first state and suspend the driving assist and notify to the driver that the driving assist is not carried out when the side minors are judged to be in the second state.
