SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR ENHANCING TRANSACTION DATA - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18536458 titled 'SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR ENHANCING TRANSACTION DATA

Simplified Explanation

The patent application abstract describes a system that tracks user activity on a merchant's website to determine the effectiveness of online advertising campaigns.

  • The system receives data such as timestamps, user identification, and URLs related to user clicks and transactions.
  • It compares the timestamps and user identification data to verify the connection between the user's click on an ad and their subsequent transaction with the merchant.
  • If the data matches within a predetermined period, the system stores the referring URL, current URL, and merchant name in a database for analysis.

Potential Applications

This technology could be used in digital marketing to measure the impact of online advertising on user transactions. It can help merchants optimize their advertising strategies and improve their return on investment.

Problems Solved

This technology addresses the challenge of attributing online user activity to specific advertising campaigns. By tracking user clicks and transactions, it provides valuable insights into the effectiveness of marketing efforts.

Benefits

- Improved tracking of user behavior online - Enhanced understanding of advertising campaign performance - Increased efficiency in marketing spend allocation

Potential Commercial Applications

"Enhancing Online Advertising Campaigns with User Activity Tracking Technology"

Possible Prior Art

One possible prior art could be the use of cookies to track user activity on websites for advertising purposes. However, this technology goes beyond simple cookie tracking by correlating user clicks with actual transactions.

Unanswered Questions

How does the system ensure the accuracy of the timestamps provided by the web browser plugin and transaction data?

The system may use server-side validation to verify the timestamps and user identification data received from the web browser plugin and transaction data. This validation process can help ensure the accuracy and integrity of the data used for analysis.

What measures are in place to protect user privacy and data security while collecting and storing this information?

The system may implement data encryption and access controls to safeguard user information collected during the tracking process. Additionally, compliance with data protection regulations such as GDPR can help ensure user privacy and data security are maintained.

Original Abstract Submitted

A system may receive, via a web browser plugin on a user device, a first timestamp associated with first click data at a website associated with a merchant, a referring uniform resource location (URL), a current URL, and first user identification data. The system may also receive transaction data including a second timestamp, second user identification data, and a first merchant name associated with a transaction with the merchant. The system may determine whether the first timestamp is within a predetermined period of the second timestamp and determine whether the first user identification data corresponds with the second user identification data. When the system determines that the first timestamp is within the predetermined period of the second timestamp and the first user identification data corresponds with the second user identification data, the system may store the referring URL and the current URL with the first merchant name in a database.
