FOAM COMPOSITIONS AND USES THEREOF - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18503466 titled 'FOAM COMPOSITIONS AND USES THEREOF

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes components for articles of footwear and athletic equipment that include a foam with a composition containing a thermoplastic copolyester. A polymer layer is provided on at least one surface of the foam portion to control or reduce water uptake. Methods of making the compositions, foams, and components are also provided, including injection molding and compression molding.

  • Thermoplastic copolyester composition for foam structure
  • Polymer layer to control water uptake
  • Methods of making compositions, foams, and components
  • Injection molding and compression molding techniques

Potential Applications

The technology can be applied in the manufacturing of footwear, athletic equipment, and other products requiring lightweight and water-resistant foam components.

Problems Solved

This technology addresses the issue of water absorption in foam materials, providing a solution for maintaining the integrity and performance of footwear and athletic equipment in wet conditions.

Benefits

The use of thermoplastic copolyester compositions and polymer layers enhances the durability, water resistance, and overall quality of foam components, extending the lifespan of articles of footwear and athletic equipment.

Potential Commercial Applications

The technology can be utilized in the production of running shoes, sports padding, protective gear, and various types of athletic equipment that require lightweight, durable, and water-resistant foam components.

Possible Prior Art

Prior art may include existing methods of incorporating polymer layers into foam materials to enhance water resistance and durability in footwear and athletic equipment manufacturing processes.

Unanswered Questions

How does the water uptake control affect the overall performance of the foam components in different environmental conditions?

The abstract mentions that the polymer layer can control or reduce the water uptake of the foam portion. It would be interesting to explore how this feature impacts the performance and longevity of the foam components in various environmental conditions, such as humidity levels or exposure to water.

What are the specific properties of the thermoplastic copolyester composition that make it suitable for foam structures in footwear and athletic equipment?

The abstract highlights the use of a thermoplastic copolyester composition for the foam structure. Further investigation into the specific properties of this composition, such as flexibility, durability, and water resistance, could provide insights into why it is well-suited for applications in footwear and athletic equipment.

Original Abstract Submitted

Components for articles of footwear and athletic equipment including a foam are provided. The foam portion of the components and articles include a composition which includes a thermoplastic copolyester, the composition having a foam structure. A polymer layer is provided on at least on surface of the foam portion. The polymer layer can control or reduce the water uptake of the foam portion. Methods of making the compositions, foams, and components are provided, as well as methods of making an article of footwear including one of the foam components. In some aspects, the foams and foam components can be made by injection molding, or injection molding followed by compression molding.
