METHOD AND APPARATUS TO ENABLE SEGMENTED CSI REPORTING IN WIRELESS COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18477477 titled 'METHOD AND APPARATUS TO ENABLE SEGMENTED CSI REPORTING IN WIRELESS COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS

Simplified Explanation

The abstract describes a method for operating a user equipment (UE) in a wireless communication system to provide channel state information (CSI) feedback. The method involves receiving CSI reference signals (CSI-RSs) and CSI feedback configuration information from a base station (BS). The UE estimates the channel based on the received CSI-RSs and determines the number of non-zero coefficients (K) for each layer of a total number of υ layers, where υ≥1 is a rank value. The method further includes transmitting the CSI feedback, including the K value, to the BS over an uplink (UL) channel.

  • The method involves receiving CSI-RSs and CSI feedback configuration information from a base station.
  • The UE estimates the channel based on the received CSI-RSs.
  • The UE determines the number of non-zero coefficients (K) for each layer based on the estimated channel and CSI feedback configuration information.
  • The total number of non-zero coefficients (K) is calculated as the sum of K across each of the υ layers.
  • The UE transmits the CSI feedback, including the K value, to the base station over an uplink channel.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • This method can be applied in wireless communication systems to improve the accuracy of channel state information feedback from user equipment to base stations.
  • It can be used in various wireless communication standards, such as 5G and beyond, to enhance the performance of communication systems.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • The method solves the problem of efficiently estimating the channel state information in a wireless communication system.
  • It addresses the challenge of determining the number of non-zero coefficients for each layer based on the estimated channel and CSI feedback configuration information.

Benefits of this technology:

  • The method improves the accuracy of channel state information feedback, which can enhance the overall performance and reliability of wireless communication systems.
  • It enables efficient utilization of network resources by determining the optimal number of non-zero coefficients for each layer.
  • This technology can contribute to the development of advanced wireless communication systems, such as those supporting massive MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) and beamforming techniques.

Original Abstract Submitted

A method for operating a user equipment (UE) for channel state information (CSI) feedback in a wireless communication system is provided. The method comprises receiving, from a base station (BS), CSI reference signals (CSI-RSs) and CSI feedback configuration information, estimating a channel based on the received CSI-RSs, determining, based on the estimated channel and the CSI feedback configuration information, a number of non-zero coefficients (K) for each layer (l) of a total number of υ layers, wherein υ≥1 is a rank value, and a sum of the Kacross each of the υ layers as a total number of non-zero coefficients (K), where K=ΣK. The method further comprises transmitting, to the BS, the CSI feedback including the Kvalue over an uplink (UL) channel.
