CONTACT DETECTION APPARATUS - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18469634 titled 'CONTACT DETECTION APPARATUS

Simplified Explanation

The contact detection apparatus described in the patent application is designed to detect contact or impact on a vehicle's bumper. Here is a simplified explanation of the patent application:

  • Bumper beam extends in vehicle width direction
  • Absorber is adjacent to bumper beam and extends in vehicle width direction
  • Contact sensor includes pressure tube for detecting pressure changes
  • Pressure tube held by absorber
  • Tube holder with recess for pressure tube
  • Deformation space at rear of vehicle for absorbing impact force
  • Absorber support member in gap between absorber and front panel of vehicle

Potential Applications

The technology described in the patent application could be applied in the automotive industry for improving safety features in vehicles, specifically in detecting and responding to impacts on the bumper.

Problems Solved

This technology helps in detecting impacts on the vehicle's bumper, which can assist in triggering safety mechanisms or alerts to prevent further damage or injury.

Benefits

The contact detection apparatus provides an additional layer of safety for vehicles by detecting impacts and responding accordingly. This can potentially reduce the severity of accidents and improve overall vehicle safety.

Potential Commercial Applications

  • Improved safety features for vehicles
  • Integration into existing automotive systems for enhanced impact detection and response

Possible Prior Art

One possible prior art for this technology could be existing contact detection systems in vehicles that are designed to detect impacts on the bumper and trigger safety mechanisms.

Unanswered Questions

How does the contact sensor communicate the detected impact to the vehicle's safety systems?

The patent application does not provide details on how the contact sensor's signal is utilized to trigger safety mechanisms in the vehicle.

Are there any specific materials or technologies used in the construction of the absorber and bumper beam to enhance impact absorption?

The patent application does not mention any specific materials or technologies used in the construction of the absorber and bumper beam for improved impact absorption.

Original Abstract Submitted

A contact detection apparatus includes a bumper beam, an absorber, a contact sensor, a tube holder, a deformation space, and an absorber support member. The bumper beam extends in a vehicle width direction. The absorber is disposed adjacent to the bumper beam and extends in the vehicle width direction. The contact sensor includes a pressure tube and is configured to output a signal corresponding to a change in pressure of the pressure tube. The pressure tube extends in the vehicle width direction and is held by the absorber. The tube holder has a recess that holds the pressure tube. The deformation space is opened toward a rear side of a vehicle and configured to be deformed by a pressing force to be applied to the absorber. The absorber support member is provided in a gap between the absorber and a front panel of the vehicle.
