SHOULDER AIRBAG AND METHOD OF CONTROLLING DEPLOYMENT THEREOF - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18460384 titled 'SHOULDER AIRBAG AND METHOD OF CONTROLLING DEPLOYMENT THEREOF

Simplified Explanation

The shoulder airbag described in the patent application is designed to adjust the inflation of chambers covering an occupant's shoulders based on the occupant's body type and the direction of a collision. This innovative technology aims to enhance occupant safety in various collision scenarios.

  • The shoulder airbag includes an occupant detection sensor to determine the posture and body type of the occupant.
  • The airbag cushion consists of chambers that can be inflated to cover the front, side, and upper portions of each shoulder.
  • A controller is used to vary the inflation of the chambers based on occupant information analyzed during a collision accident.

Potential Applications

This technology could be applied in the automotive industry to improve the safety features of vehicles and protect occupants in the event of a collision.

Problems Solved

This innovation addresses the issue of providing tailored protection to occupants based on their body type and the specific circumstances of a collision, enhancing overall safety.

Benefits

- Enhanced occupant safety in various collision scenarios - Customized protection based on occupant characteristics - Improved overall vehicle safety features

Potential Commercial Applications

The technology could be integrated into vehicles by automotive manufacturers to enhance the safety standards of their products, potentially appealing to safety-conscious consumers.

Possible Prior Art

Prior airbag systems may not have had the capability to adjust inflation based on occupant body type and collision direction, making this innovation a unique advancement in occupant safety technology.

Unanswered Questions

How does the occupant detection sensor differentiate between different body types?

The patent application does not provide specific details on how the occupant detection sensor identifies and categorizes various body types for inflation adjustment.

What testing has been conducted to validate the effectiveness of the variable inflation control system?

The patent application does not mention any specific testing or validation procedures that have been carried out to demonstrate the efficacy of the variable inflation control system in real-world collision scenarios.

Original Abstract Submitted

Disclosed are a shoulder airbag and a method of controlling deployment thereof that are capable of adjusting the amount of inflation of chambers covering an occupant's shoulders depending on the body type of the occupant and/or the collision direction of a vehicle, thereby safely protecting the occupant in various collision situations. The shoulder airbag includes an occupant detection sensor configured to detect the posture and body type of an occupant, an airbag cushion including chambers configured to be inflated and deployed so as to cover the front, side, and upper portions of each of the shoulders of the occupant, and a controller configured to variably control the amount of inflation of each of the chambers covering the front, side, and upper portions of each of the shoulders of the occupant based on occupant information analyzed based on the posture and body type of the occupant when a collision accident occurs.
