METHOD AND APPARATUS OF SUPPORTING LOSSLESS PDCP VERSION CHANGE IN NEXT-GENERATION MOBILE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18449292 titled 'METHOD AND APPARATUS OF SUPPORTING LOSSLESS PDCP VERSION CHANGE IN NEXT-GENERATION MOBILE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a method and terminal for handling a change in packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) entities in a wireless communication system. Here is a simplified explanation of the abstract:

  • The method involves receiving a radio resource control (RRC) message that indicates a change from a first PDCP entity to a second PDCP entity.
  • The information in the RRC message is used to determine if the first PDCP entity has changed.
  • If the first PDCP entity has changed, data with a PDCP sequence number for the first entity is processed as new data for the second entity.
  • The first PDCP entity is then released, and a new PDCP header associated with the data is configured.
  • The data is encrypted using a new security key.
  • The PDCP sequence number of the first entity is compared to the PDCP sequence number of data that has not been successfully transmitted from a radio link control (RLC) entity.

Potential applications of this technology:

  • This technology can be applied in wireless communication systems, such as cellular networks, to efficiently handle changes in packet data convergence protocol entities.
  • It can be used in devices such as smartphones, tablets, and other wireless communication devices that rely on PDCP for data transmission.

Problems solved by this technology:

  • The method and terminal provide a solution for seamlessly transitioning from one PDCP entity to another without losing or corrupting data.
  • It ensures that data with a PDCP sequence number for the first entity is correctly processed as new data for the second entity.
  • The technology addresses the need for efficient handling of PDCP entity changes in wireless communication systems.

Benefits of this technology:

  • The method and terminal enable smooth and uninterrupted data transmission during PDCP entity changes, improving the overall user experience.
  • It ensures data integrity and security by encrypting the data with a new security key after the PDCP entity change.
  • The technology optimizes the use of radio resources by releasing the first PDCP entity once the change is confirmed.

Original Abstract Submitted

A method and terminal are provided in which a radio resource control (RRC) message is received which includes information indicating a change from a first packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) to a second PDCP entity. It is identified whether the first PDCP entity is changed based on the information indicating the change. Data with a PDCP sequence number for the first PDCP entity is processed as new data for the second PDCP entity, in case that the first PDCP entity is changed. The first PDCP entity is released. A new PDCP header associated with the data is configured. The data is encrypted with a new security key. The PDCP sequence number of the first PDCP entity is greater than or equal to the PDCP sequency number of data for which successful transmission is not acknowledged from a radio link control (RLC) entity.
