PROCESSING METHOD AND APPARATUS WITH AUGMENTED REALITY - A simplified explanation of the abstract

This abstract first appeared for US patent application 18402251 titled 'PROCESSING METHOD AND APPARATUS WITH AUGMENTED REALITY

Simplified Explanation

The patent application describes a method and apparatus for processing augmented reality (AR) by compensating for light attenuation caused by the display area of an AR device. Here are the key points:

  • Determining a compensation parameter to offset light attenuation of visual information displayed through the AR device.
  • Generating a background image of the target scene without light attenuation by capturing it with the device's camera.
  • Creating a compensation image by reducing the brightness of the background image using the compensation parameter.
  • Generating a virtual object image to overlay on the target scene.
  • Synthesizing the compensation image and the virtual object image to create a display image.
  • Displaying the final display image in the AR device's display area.

Potential Applications

This technology could be used in various AR applications such as gaming, navigation, education, and training simulations.

Problems Solved

This innovation solves the issue of light attenuation on visual information displayed through AR devices, ensuring a more accurate and immersive AR experience.

Benefits

The benefits of this technology include improved visual quality, enhanced user experience, and more realistic AR overlays on the real world.

Potential Commercial Applications

Commercial applications of this technology could include AR advertising, virtual try-on experiences for retail, interactive museum exhibits, and AR-enhanced tours and experiences.

Possible Prior Art

One possible prior art could be the use of light compensation techniques in photography or video editing software to enhance image quality in various lighting conditions.

Unanswered Questions

How does this technology impact battery life on AR devices?

This article does not address the potential impact of this technology on the battery life of AR devices. Implementing additional image processing algorithms could potentially increase power consumption.

Are there any limitations to the size or type of virtual objects that can be overlaid using this technology?

The article does not mention any limitations on the size or type of virtual objects that can be overlaid on the target scene. It would be important to understand if there are any restrictions in terms of complexity or size of virtual objects that can be effectively displayed.

Original Abstract Submitted

A method and apparatus for processing augmented reality (AR) including determining a compensation parameter to compensate for light attenuation of visual information caused by a display area of an AR device as the visual information corresponding to a target scene is displayed through the display area, generating a background image without the light attenuation by capturing the target scene using a camera of the AR device, generating a compensation image by reducing brightness of the background image using the compensation parameter, generating a virtual object image to be overlaid on the target scene, generating a display image by synthesizing the compensation image and the virtual object image, and displaying the display image in the display area.
